Gary Parrish's CBS Sportsline column today addresses Sampson's NBA future and what Pearl can learn from it.

"An NBA job is a job for a basketball coach. A college job is a job for a recruiter and marketer." Well said.

You can't have a 442-129 career record by being a "below average coach and an average recruiter".

He was a dang good coach, one of the top in college basketball. It's even more evident how he was able to completely switch styles of play to fit the team he put on the court to give us the best chance of winning

The job of a college coach is to recruit, market and coach. I'd say he was a decent recruiter, but could've been better. Never did recruit a point guard that was a difference maker. His marketing skills goes without saying. His X's and O's aren't to be confused with someone like an Izzo, but to say he was below average is wrong. You don't have the record he had over the course of many seasons by being below average.

Unless you surround yourself with good assistants. Everyone knows Jason Shay was huge in scouting those National Championship Florida teams for example and with less talent beat them 3 of 4.

He had a very high bust rate.

Arguably the best player he coached here was already on campus when Pearl signed on.

I did enjoy the life he brought back to the program.

Pearl is a good coach, but not good enough for the NBA. He's an OK recruiter but one hell of a marketer.

That's not necessarily a knock on him.
