You can't have a 442-129 career record by being a "below average coach and an average recruiter".
The job of a college coach is to recruit, market and coach. I'd say he was a decent recruiter, but could've been better. Never did recruit a point guard that was a difference maker. His marketing skills goes without saying. His X's and O's aren't to be confused with someone like an Izzo, but to say he was below average is wrong. You don't have the record he had over the course of many seasons by being below average.
