Since we play the evil empire tomorrow, I thought that I'd go back in time to the gridscape days and repost this missive by the late, great Tennstud, may he RIP.
Bobby Franklin, coach at NWCC, was a long time close friend; I hosted recruiting functions for them since Memphis, my home, was only 45 minutes from Senatobia. Cassisus Ware, later great lb at Ole MIss, was a friend; he was from my home town in MIss., Batesville. Cassisus roomed with, and was the best friends with, Darrell Rudd, 4 years older than Dewayne. Dewayne started coming up to Memphis with his brother and Cassisus when Dewaye was in the 10th grade. I followed with a great deal of interest Dewayne's high school success and recruitment. I bought many clothes for Dewayne, helped him out, as he and his family were friends. He was over my house with some of his team mates one night and since Dewayne's recruitment was one of those recruiting stories Bob Bell and Bill King followed, Dewayne suggested "why don't I just call in and tell them I'm going to UT". Some of his team mates dared him; Dewayne did. I was asked by the UT authorities if Rudd had called from my house; I denied he did. Dewayne went through the recruiting process always intending to attend UT. Alabama started recruiting him hard. There was a big Bama booster in Batesville, a furniture store owner, who became a friend of Logan when they started recruiting Dewayne. This furniture guy became the money man, the handiman, for Logan. Dewayne enjoyed the recruiting process; he even visited Minnesota for some reason and when he returned, flying into the Memphis air port, I had to pick him up and drive him down to Batesville, 60 miles south. A week or two before signing, Dewayne called and said he had to see me; his brother, Darrell, drove him up. Dewayne was emotional, saying he wanted to go to UT but he had such an offer that was so good for he and his family he had to go to Alabama. I told him he had to do what was best for him, that there was no way I could, would counter Bama's offer. Through the Bama furniture dealer, his family got a new car, Dewayne got a used car, $10,000 in cash to the family, and Dewayne was to receive $1,000 a month while he was at Tuscaloosa. I told Dewayne you have no choice; you have to go to Alabama, Tennessee would really like to have you, I would like for you to go to UT, but you have no choice. Thus, Dewayne went to Alabama. Alabama was recruiting Deshea Townsend, Batesville qb, and Dewayne's best friend while UT wasn't so Dewayne had a friend to attend Bama. Dewayne has kept in touch and I have never held it against him. ---walks, money talks. Logan had the money and was willing and able to spend it for recruits.
