A different article suggested that phones with stock (or near-stock) Android (such as the Nexus 6) may have already been patched. This could potentially be a major issue with the more heavily skinned and/or older models due to the lag in (or complete lack of) an update to patch the vulnerability.

I never used Hangouts, but just in case, I've disabled it on my phone.

So did I, after reading your post?

I have Verizon, been using the basic message app, thought about going to Verizon Message Plus. Thoughts?

Gramps, that's what I use. I text from both phone and my tablet and both devices sync up. I downloaded the app for free onto my tablet. I tried other apps but Verizon works best for me

You can disable auto-download/retrieve in your messaging app settings. I use hangouts and handcent and both were disabled
