Out of that hindsight 20/20 vision, Kelly would definitely seem to fit the mold as a guy who could've established himself here for quite a while.

Kelly wouldn't have taken the job if offered. His son told him he didn't want to move to Tennessee. After that, he publicly withdrew from consideration.

I'm still not sold on Brian Kelly, and I think he'll struggle at ND. Of course, based on the way he's already got solid OL prospects committing, I could be very wrong.

I've also never been a big fan of Butch Davis. He's doing well at UNC, but 8-5 doesn't live up to all the hype he gets IMO (yes, I know that's better than we've done the past two years). To me, he just didn't seem like the right guy for UT - especially right after Kiffin.

I think I'm just as happy with Dooley as I would've been with either of those.

Davis >>>> Dooley

We'll see in a few years

Davis is going to have to do better than 8-5 at UNC to live up to the hype, though

Davis built the most talented team in college football history at Miami. Also, UNC doesn't really give a crap about football; 8 win seasons are more than enough to keep Davis' job safe there, but he'll break through to 9 or 10 very soon.

+1. UNC doesn't give a **** about football and he doesn't have the support there to be successful.

He proved at Miami he had an extreme eye for talent and was able to take a left for dead program back among the elite in college football.

I'm not sold on Kelly yet either. We'll see how he does at ND, but I'm still not gaga over the guy.

Better than Jimmie Johnsons teams?

I am not disagreeing with you, but we don't really have a way to know this. Same thing with Dooley, we don't know how he will do.

He rebuilt Miami into a powerhouse and made UNC football decent. I see no reason to think he couldn't restore a program like UT to prominence.

Was he ever a serious candidate for the job at UT during our last 2 searches? Did he turn us down or did we not pursue him hard enough?

He also did that a decade ago. We already know how much a coach can change In a decade...
