Another joke from ESPN. Top 76 players of NBA’s first 75 years…

Prior to the top-75 list by ESPN, The Athletic had a top-75 NBA list. King wasn’t on that list, either.

King is 34th on the all time NBA/ABA combined ppg average list. When he was at this best I agree he was a top 25 scorer but his career numbers are not enough to demand that he be a top 75 player of all time, although you could make an argument for him. Comparing him to Rodman is apples to oranges.
Rodman was a dominate force on a dominate team and you could say he was better at what he did (7x rebound champ, 2x defensive player of the year, 7x 1st team defender, 2x allstar and 5x NBA champ) than King was at scoring.
Ray Allen 10x all star, NBA and Olympic champ, retired as the 3 point NBA all time leader.
Paul Pierce was a 10 time all star and an NBA Finals MVP, with a higher PPG average than King, who was a 4 time all star.
Carmelo is a 10x all star as well, 1x scoring champion with a higher PPG average than King
Dominique was a 9x all star, 1x scoring champ, (2 x dunk champ) with a higher PPG average than King
Dave Bing 7x NBA all star and 1x NBA MVP
Damian Lillard NBA rookie of the year, 6x NBA all star and higher PPG than King
Hard to make an argument for King over any one of these guys.

Tracy Mcgrady did not make it and he is a much better version of Bernard King, with a similar injury shortened/damaged career. 7x NBA all star, 7x all NBA and 2x NBA scoring champion.
Tony Parker also did not make it as a 6x NBA all star, 4x NBA champ and 1x NBA Finals MVP

Gasol, Dwight Howard, Mutombo, Vince Carter were all off the list as well and have some serious credentials.
Vince Carter 8x all star, NBA rookie of the year (1x slam dunk champ), Olympic gold medal, played 22 years in NBA

And King will never make the list over his contemporary Alex English, who did not make it either.

The bulk of VN should really just avoid anything NBA related. The NBA knowledge on this board overall is severely lacking to say the least.

Bernard is the greatest Vol men's basketball player of all time (imo) but he isn't a top 75 NBA player. Honestly he may not even be top 100.

There is some SERIOUS ignorance in this thread. Stats are stats. Blah, blah... I hope its just youth. King wouldve ate HALF those players lunches and LAUGHED at the pussies they are. ANY player on that list passed 2000... is a FRAUD. Period. They couldnt play a lick of defense and created FLOPPING for God's sake. If King hadnt had knee issues, he wouldve put some offensive records out of sight. AND... Came back from devestating knee to win the scoring title. Folks tend to forget his career was cut very short.

You’re full of crap. King averaged 22.5 pts ppg and shot 51.8% for his career while missing considerable time in his prime due to a severe knee injury . In the NBA playoffs he averaged 24.5 ppg and shot 55.9% from the field, which is amazing.

Oh, and Larry Bird once said this about King:
”''I don't understand how Bernard does it. He's in heavy traffic - guys all over banging him and waving their arms - and he gets the shot off, not just any shot, but the shot he wants, and he cans it. Time after time. He's the best scorer I've ever seen or played against.''

of course, I‘ guessing Bird doesn’t know as much about basketball as you either.

So great, he can be on the top 75 all time "If I hadn't been injured" list.

I know it will be difficult for your narrow mind to understand, but Bernard can be great and also not top 75 of all time. That list is full of elite players that have accolades that Bernard doesn't.

Bernard probably makes first team list of "what if they never got injured" with Grant Hill, TMac, and others though.

Bill Walton is on the team and although he was a great player before injuries, carrying Portland to a NBA championship, he only scored like 6,000 points in his 10 year career.

King is in the Hall of Fame. That's all that matters. All the rest is blather. Pay no attention to lists--they're BS. Everybody produces "best" lists of everything because readers like this sort of thing, even though they're not worth taking seriously. King was a huge talent--end of story.

…and to spin up clicks from fans of players left off the list.

It tells you all we need to know about this list. Subjective populism.

Does longevity play a role? If so... understandable. His talent was unquestioned. Based on talent and production alone... easily top 75.
