BBC News - Syrian army shelling 'kills at least 200' in Tremseh

The Syrian Army has apparently hit the village of Tremseh with gunships and tank fire and then sent in the Shabiha militia to finish them off. The death toll is rumored to be around 200 people. I honestly don't know what we should do but it is clear that talking will not accomplish anything and the international community can not sit on the sidelines much longer.

Talking heads speculate that if we set up a safe haven, or something of that nature, a bunch of people would defect from the Syrian military.

Very bad situation. It doesn't appear that it will stop of its own accord either. We'll just have to see what happens in the days/months ahead.

Why not? It sure as hell isn't our problem.

Not much of a plan.

Doesn't sound like there's much of a plan right now. Last I heard, Russia and China were still being, well, Russia and China and blocking the UN from getting involved with sanctions. I could be wrong though. I haven't followed this story closely in the last couple of weeks.

If the Russians can be persuaded to stop heavy arms shipments, and the rebels can get arms from abroad, it's only a matter of time before the regime crumbles.

There's a good chance you're right. That would be an ideal conclusion to this event. The trick is forcing Russia's hand though. And that is no small task. They don't seem quite as interested in humanitarian affairs as us. Like I said, we'll just have to see what happens.

Having arms buyers is only part of it for russia.

16,000+ or so civilians, including women and children, being killed isn't a problem?

why would it be our problem? If we intervene here with anything but our voice we would have to do it everywhere.
