How many of you think Manning, Favre, Montana, Elway etc... would have said they wanted to Red Shirt? Just curious.

Manning was actually planning on redshirting until Jerry Colquitt blew his knee on about the 4th play of the season.

I think it's a mature thing for a QB to say. Everybody knows that unless there are serious depth issues, a true freshman QB should never see the field.

I remember very well the recruiting of PM. He stated that he looked forward to competing for the job. When asked if he would RS he said that would be a decision he would make with the coaches. Huge difference.

Maybe so . . . but I don't see what the big deal is. Mustain is just honest enough to speak the truth. When is it EVER not the goal to redshirt a QB? Sounds to me like he wants to go somewhere and have a chance to be in the system before he's thrown out onto the field.

If had said he wanted to go somewhere and play immediately, he'd have people labelling him as selfish. I understand what you are getting at, but I really think your overanalyzing.

Exactamundo. He might also realize that any team worthy of a top-rated QB prospect should already be in very good shape, without an immediate need for a field general. It is much more appropriate to spend a year learning the offense, adjusting to the new level of talent, speed, and complexity, and then make the jump to starter. To think that a kid can just come right out of high school, hit practice in the late summer, and win games by September puts a ton of pressure on him and often sets him up failure.

In short, I think it's a VERY mature comment for an 18 year old kid.

Can you imagine the publicity and ornery criticisms we would receive from the poor ol' state of Arkansas if Mustain signed up to be a Vol?

Could you imagine all the I hate Mustain threads that we would have if he came here and started as a freshman?

Now I really want it to happen. :dance2:

I think there is a feeling of respect for Cut that is motivating Mustain to seriously consider us.

Plus let's not forget the circus this kid has been thru the past few months...the idea of RS probably sounds pretty good...for a number of reasons....all the obvious ones, plus he gets to get acclimated to college life, and become ANONOMYS again....no one will be talking about a RS freshman qb at a big time program with an establishe qb already at the helm....it'd give him a year to learn, and just get back to being himslef again....just my two cents.

I'd rather have a kid come in and be honest and have the desire to train and improve rather some unprepared smart-aleck kid come in saying he's the stuff only to show he's a dud. What's the point in coming in wanting something but not being ready? That's the equivalent of some trash-talker who talks the talk but can't walk the walk.

I think it will be necessary for him to redshirt. At Arky, he has the Dick kid in front of him, several at ND and several at UA and UT are more seasoned as well. Add to that that he has never taken a snap under center and has rarely had pressure put on him in a game before the USAA fiasco and I believe it is realistic for him to accept a red-shirt. He will likely be a great college QB before he's done but it is also likely that he has been over-hyped as well.

One more thing to consider about his statement. UT plays at Arky next year.

:lolabove: Now THAT would be one heckuva homecoming! Can you imagine the Skoal cans, hairspray bottles, and false teeth that would litter the field when he comes out of the tunnel???

Dentists and Hairstylists will certainly earn some extra money after those games. They'll beable to move into offices with indoor plumbin'.

My point is not that I think he should start. But as a competitor, I would think he would want to try and start. I don't think he would start. And a confident kid is not a smart allek. PM was very confident and and no one thought he was a smart allek.
Accepting a redshirt once you get there is one thing. Asking for one is totally different in my opinion.

Actually, with the O line in question, I think its mature from a cynical standpoint as well as the humility tack some are taking. The buck for a struggling offense has a knack of stopping at the QB, which means not only your progress but your rep gets tainted.

If you're looking at not only doing well in CF but in the 1st round of the Draft and the team you want to join looks to be better in a year than it will be the coming Fall, machiavelli says redshirt.
