Fania was one of the main recording labels during the heydays of salsa music in the late 60s through early 80s. They signed artists like Willie Colon, Ray Barretto, Hector Lavoe, Johnny Pacheco and dozens more. If you saw any of the Latin Music USA special on PBS recently, they were covered extensively in episode 1.
Interestingly, after being difficult to come by throughout most of the 90s, the Fania CDs had been available on Amazon.com for the last few years, but I have noticed recently that they are selling out and becoming unavailable again, except as overpriced items from affiliated sellers or MP3 downloads. I'm not sure what happened recently, but they seem to be going out of print again. I guess I should do some googling to see what I can find.
Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else on here listened to that kind of stuff. I grew up in Puerto Rico during the 60s and 70s and acquired a taste for the music and an appreciation for the talent involved.
I did find some recent news about the Fania label music, but it doesn't explain why the CDs are disappearing from Amazon.com. Maybe it's just the Christmas demand, but I find it hard to believe that there are that many fans out there buying this stuff up.
I've got at least eight or more of his CDs, many of the old ones where Hector Lavoe was singing for the group. That was great stuff. This "gringo" grew up listening to it on a little transistor radio. :good!:
