For those of you who follow this stuff way more than I do.....are any decent options available the JUCO or even transfer route?

Possibly someone sorta like Cam Newton or even Trickett at West Virginia?

What about any offensive tackles?

I'm sure some will get in here and say I'm an idiot for thinking this way. Some will say trust the process and trust that redshirting Dobbs is some genius top secret mission the Vols have. That he will come out of no where and be a top QB next year.

I'm more on the side of desperation and aggressiveness and immediate fixes to get better. Finding decent quality players this route can pay huge dividends.....

Of the top 10 JUCO offensive tackles that were signed by major Div 1 teams last year, only 1 is starting....and I think he is now playing guard iirc....and he didn't begin the season as a starter. It's not a quick fix, unfortunately, to go the JUCO route for OTs.

JUCO is a hit and miss when it comes to O-lineman, unless you can get them to enroll in January, QB playing at a lower level also have risk, so you are correct quick fixes are easy.

We have some very good prospective recruits coming in but Drew Richmond is the key 5* Tackle from Memphis was looking good when he pulled the trigger at Ole Miss...and that is how its still a flip of a coin JUCO and Recruiting,.That is the reason they hope to RED SHIRT Blair so he will be here for 2 years, came in late and out of shape but if they can make it thru this season it will help the timing of the maturing of left tackle position.

So here's something to think about, you have a DE that 260 and runs 4.6 to 4.8 40 and he is speed rushing while you are back pedaling, at the time of impact you have to stop him in his tracks without whiffing or letting him stop and redirect his path inside because he sees its a run...its not easy for young players to block the DE and knowing the play..

So playing a freshman with less experience is even better? I'd would take my chances at this rate

I don't think we need to look at Juco's QB wise. I think we are just fine there.

I'd guess the coaches would consider Juco OT's, just not sure they go that route this year. With us not really losing anyone on the OL headed into 2015, IMO it's better to restock with HS recruits at this point.

I understand your point here, but I'd still almost lean towards allowing the current offensive line to finish out this year and restock with freshmen, because our line will still be here next year and we all know they can't get any worse. At least build some depth for the future by getting some younger OTs/Gs in here.

Having (4) OL guys already committed shows the staff is restocking the OL just fine. IMO the best case scenario right now is all of those (4) coming in RS. Let them develop before throwing them to the wolves like they did with Thomas and Robertson this year. HOPEFULLY the staff can develop/improve the guys playing OL for UT now so they look much more prepared in 2015.

He obviously runs the ball really well. Having completed only about 40 passes last year in Juco and only about 60 in his SR year of HS, not sure he would make sense for UT's offense. He would have to go from completing 4-5 passes a game to 25-30. His offers tells me his passing skills may not be what most schools are looking for at the QB position.

Yea I understand he doesnt have off the chart passing numbers but he would be a running threat.

But, how many of them would be starting for us this year? I'm not saying go get 5 Juco guys but if we can get one or two of the really highly rated guys then they might be worth a look. This will be a stop gap until the HS recruits have a chance to bulk up and learn.

Good JUCO QBs are hard to find unless they are transfers/were highly recruited but kicked off a team previous like Cam Newton and Zach Mettenberger. Good JUCO OLmen are a little more common but generally you are looking at 4-7 SEC caliber linesmen a year from JUCO ranks and maybe 1 QB at most. Bo Wallace was a transfer from the JUCO ranks-set NJCAA records.

We aren't recruiting any Juco QB's. Butch already told Dormady and his Dad he id the only true QB they are bringing in with Jennings getting a shot at QB. Don't see them risk losing Dormady by lying to them.

Did a little digging and another interesting option Juco wise at OL(maybe) IMO would be Walvenski Aime out of Fort Scott CC in Kansas. He is 6'5 290 and runs a 4.75 40. He played TE in HS. He plays DT for his Juco. He recently did an interview talking about his recruitment and said he is hearing from Arkansas and would love to get a chance to play in the SEC. Only offers right now are S. Alabama and Northern Illinois. Looks to be very quick on film as a DT. He did say in the interview he would not be opposed to playing on the OL at all and that is where Pittman is considering him to play for the hogs.

Just another name to look at.

Nice dig Leb. If he gets a SEC offer things could take off. Not sure the risk vs reward is there though. The guy still has to learn the position and the playbook, something that isn't ideal when taking a prospect who has limited eligibility. See Woody Quinn :)

What about going the Michael Roos route? Surely there are some big bodied basketball players in East TN with little hope of playing Div 1 basketball. Offer a 6'5" to 6'8" 250+ pounder from a small school playing C or PF with quick feet a preferred walkon spot and develop the sh** out of him.

Lurk alot in the RF. Seldom have anything to add to the convo. Have a question about JUCO O linemen though. Would UT not want to narrow their search for JUCOs who currently are in a similar gap scheme offense?

I would think so. Would surely help their progression once on campus.
