I had a very large river birch cut down and the stump chopped up about 2 weeks ago at the corner of my house. Ever since then there has been a puddle of foamy liquid in the shallow depression where the stump was. Is this sap? As far as I know there is no water line there and it hasn't rained.

Yes it's sap. It's spring time.

It's the spirit of the beautiful river birch getting ready to come back and haunt you.

It was a beautiful tri- trunk Heritage River Birch that was planted too close to the house and the roots were raising up the driveway and sidewalk. I hated to remove it.

Tree question: when is it safe to plant privacy evergreens? We would like to add some of those nice fast-growing firs along our property line this spring.

Spring or Fall
If you really want them up this spring pull the trigger now. Fall is the most ideal time, late September through October but you can plant evergreens in spring as well. You just don't want to do it too close to summer where it gets really hot and dry.

It really depends on who you ask, but I have always planted them in spring, early summer, and early fall with complete success.

Next nice weekend you have, do it.

Mix up a little thrive in a bucket and give them a nice dose of it.

Water regularly until they have settled in nicely.

Oh and don't do like some. Plant them with the root ball roughly 1-2"s above grade. It will keep them from drowning and also reduce chance of a fungus setting in.

Does anyone know what to do about ash borers? I have an ash tree that I planted at my mothers when I was a kid that's dying and she wants to save it.

It depends on how big the tree is(diameter), how much damage is already done(<40%), how much you want to spend to save it.

You can try the soil treatment products from Home Depot/Lowes such as Bayer. They contain the insecticide Imidacloprid. The do it yourself soil treatments I think are more for preventative maintenance than treating an already infested tree. The other option is to have the tree injected with Emamectin Benzoate which is said to be more effective at killing the beetle in all of it's stages of life as well as offering 2 years of protection. I have no idea how much it costs but the larger the diameter the more it's going to be.
