to college football if they are unhappy with their NFL draft position. It’s not like these guys are amateurs these days anyway.

They should be allowed a week from day 1 of the draft to make their declaration to return. If the current school doesn’t have room or doesn’t want the player to return then let him use the portal.

In short I will disagree with you. There's just as good a chance that Hyatt was told that he would be a 2nd to 3rd round pick and he was ok with that. No disrespect but it's life and time to move on. Other players have worked during winter work outs and in spring practice. It's their time.

So an NFL team takes a chance on someone and they bail and go back to college.....what happens the next year when NFL teams dont trust the player to show up and play.....would show terrible character.

Congrats on caring more about the NFL than you do the player. You do know teams are allowed to sign undrafted players and free agents, right?

Players have a decision to make. Stay in school or enter the draft. They have all the information needed to make an informed decision. Sometimes they make the wrong one. Decisions have consequences, the rest of us have to deal with consequences...why shouldn't football players.

If you leave your job and take a new one but hate it, is your old employer going to let you come back? Nope, you will have been replaced and will have to deal with the consequences of your decision.

Not caring more about the NFL than players, treating players like adults.

Your job analogy, although total garbage, is the reason I said a player should be able to enter the portal if his current school either doesn’t have room or wish to move on. Hello?

You don't know that, do you..???
The simple fact is that in the real world, business decisions are made for business reasons. We're in an era where the whole fantasy of the so-called "Student Athlete" has been stripped away. Our beloved game of NCAA Football is revealed for what it is...BIG Business. Players are employees, schools are Employers. Whether we like it or not, that's the reality. I hate to have to say that because I'm one of those who held on to that fantasy longer than most. Let both of the parties involved do what they believe is in their best interest and enjoy the games.

There are so many pitfalls with this idea.

So, if I'm the #1 pick in the draft as a junior, but I'm taken by the NY Jets, a perennial joke of a franchise, I can just bail on their investment? The Jets are screwed out of the #1 overall pick because I didn't get what I wanted?

Seem too far-fetched? Eli Manning essentially strong-armed the Chargers into trading him after drafting him #1 overall after initially telling the team he refused to play for them.

Maybe a fair compromise would be to allow UDFAs to return to school, but not anyone selected by a team that used draft capital to acquire their rights.

Players already have a specified window to withdraw their name from the draft and remain in school ??

We have (or had) 85 spots to work with....unsure what cornbeard cost us.

But, in kinda keeping it simple math, we need 22 to depart to bring in 22 new ones.

Without having a mechanism of pushing the chicks out of nest, some of these cats would find ways to hang around / play ball until they are 27-28 years old.

just my two cents

If I’m not mistaken can’t kids get drafted in the mlb draft and just not sign with whoever drafts them? Just keep playing for their high school or college team. Granted, most times if they go in the first round they sign.

Yes, they can, but there is usually a level of transparency about what it will take to get the kid signed prior to drafting him in MLB that provides a lot of flexibility. The NFL has a tiered/slotted rookie draft pay scale with no wiggle room. MLB also has a plan in place to compensate teams who fail to sign their 1st or 2nd round picks. Implementing the MLB Draft rules into the NFL would require a major overhaul of how the NFL Draft works.

Everyone gets a trophy mentality. No thank you, life is made up of choices!

Nope. Nope. Nope.

Sorry, but declaring for the draft is a grown mans decision.

Would make it impossible to set rosters and scholarships at the college level. Really want to have to cut your new 5 star freshman WR because Hyatt wants to come back for one year? A year where he will be trying mostly not to get hurt?

Too many problems to even think about

I'm assuming most of us here have achieved at least some level of professional success considering the amount of $ we spend on all things Vol. Pass on an opportunity, that is gone for a lifetime in most cases. Don't screw up the opportunities you do get and chances are you will have a decent life. No different for an NFL player. No law saying Hyatt can't become the next Jerry Rice or Hooker can't be the next Tom Brady because they were drafted in the third. Their careers are now fully in their own hands.

Was gonna reply but you summed up nicely why it would never be allowed.

Let the team who drafted own your contract even if you go back to school, with the option of dumping it completely or picking it up one uear later if you re-enter the draft. Doesn't seem like a hard compromise

Making informed decisions
Since 2016, college athletes who are interested in going pro have been able to declare for the draft and attend the NBA combine but have been required to withdraw no more than 10 days after the combine to stay eligible. Now, students who wish to enter the draft also must request an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee, which will provide valuable information to assist student-athletes in making the decision to turn pro or stay in school.

Something similar for football needs to be in place. Participate in a combine or a Pro Day is fine, get your evaluation continue to draft or withdraw with in 10 days to remain eligible.

But after the draft is a BIG NO.

its not like they are 17 anymore. they are given tons of information on their perceived draft status. they made a decision, let them live with it. real world consequences. whats the end goal? guy comes back, plays another year, what happens if he doesn't improve his stock? What happens if he gets injured? What happens if he still doesn't like his draft position the second time? You could have third year guys backing out of their draft position at least 2 more times, with and outside shot of it happening a third.

at some point they have to live with the results, it should be the first time. Thats the lesson to learn, don't leave until you are sure. if anything NIL gives them an excuse to NOT declare for the draft in the first time. getting round 4-7 vibes? Stay at your school and probably make similar money. NIL isn't an excuse for them to come back, its an excuse for them to not leave in the first place.

And where do their a scholly's go? What about the recruits that came there to play and now the guy they are replacing decides to come back?

About 1000 reasons why this doesn't work and won't work on the CFB level.

It works for baseball because they don't technically declare for the draft and players are selected straight out of high school as well.
