Anybody flying through Atlanta this week?

The outage, which affected all airport operations, started with a fire in a Georgia Power underground electrical facility, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said. The electrical fire's intensity damaged two substations serving the airport, including the airport's "redundant system" that should have provided backup power, Reed said.

I’m not an electrical engineer but shouldn’t a backup system be away from the primary? What’s the point of having a backup if one accident can knock both of them out?

First thing I thought as well DO, I guess it was just too easy to run them side by side.

There is serious discussion going on on whether or not they actually have/had a backup system. The crucial tower and runway lights had independent backups and remained on but the main airport function was SOL.

Internet rumors are out there (obviously take it with a grain of salt) that both systems were sabotaged and there was one plane from a firm in Israel that deals with hauling crazy things (like top secret stuff) that somehow made use of the airport at this time for both landing and taking off. It’s that 4chan group running with this.

Lol
Mossad wouldn't operate like that. If you're trying to do something covert the last thing you do is make a spectacle of it. Taking out the busiest airport on the planet is not covert.

Yeah, that's what I'd do to. If I needed to transport something top secret that I wanted no one else to know about, I'd move it through the world's single busiest airport and just cut the power beforehand so nobody would be the wiser. Makes total sense
