Jerry Kirk (sp?) Former DL coach for Tennessee from back in the 80's? I'm on vacation in Myrtle Beach and met him at the Grand Coastal Mall. He works a little booth for an indoor bounce house, and I spent at least an hour talking football with him. He says he also coached at Kentucky prior. I've searched all over the internet and the only thing I could find was a picture of him on and old staff of a Lou Holtz team at NCSU I think.

He spoke a lot about the hatred between Johnny Majors and Fulmer, something we all know plenty about. He also talked about how bad Johnny wanted to fire Phillip and threatened to do it, to which Phillip said "Go ahead and try it, see how far you get, this is my university to and I love it just as much as you do, maybe more than you" and so on. Talked about Johnny's alcoholism and how bad it was for the university's publicity. He didn't speak ill of Majors, just told it like it was. Said I would not believe some of the cursing matches between those two in the locker room. I told him yes I would. Also talked about a lot of other players that were there during his time, Dale Jones, Reggie White, Willie Gault, etc. Anyway, I thought it was interesting to run into a former UT guy randomly working at a mall in South Carolina, but have been unable to find much online about him, and I was a young child around that time, so I wouldn't remember him either way.

P.S. - If the dude is on here that gave me a "Go Vols" shout out on the beach after seeing my Tennessee visor, thanks man and Go Vols!

So he parlayed coaching Reggie White into a career at a mall bounce house?

He better be careful...Da'Rick is younger and the word out of Buffalo is he's looking for new career opportunities...

A bounce house? He could've just had some of Da'Ricks ex-girlfriends lay on their back and provide more entertainment.

Oh well, to each his own...

:lolabove: Ha ha! No, according to him, he moved down here to coach high school football and did for several years, and when he retired he stayed because he likes it here. I guess he has the mall job to pass the time and have something to do. Seriously though, you and I could have coached Reggie into greatness. He had it all along. And if Da'rick doesn't cut it in the NFL, I'm saying there's a 50/50 chance he makes license plates for a living.

Fulmer doesn't strike me as a cusser. He has been called a father figure by many an athlete going through the program. I can see him in a heated argument but not cussing and disrespecting CJM.

FWIW, both are from Franklin County area. Fulmer coached/played at FCHS in Winchester; Majors played 13 miles down the road at my alma mater Huntland High, also in Franklin County. But he grew up near Lynchburg...did someone mention alcoholism?

I'd feel like he was a father figure too, if I grew up with no father, like many of the athletes who have come through this program, and I'm sure you know what I mean. He may have very well been a father figure but as was stated by another on here, that has nothing to do with getting into a cursing match with somebody, whether that actually happened or not to the degree he said.

Point pretty clear. He was around when both of them were there. Did the tension between Fulmer and Majors begin in 1992? I don't think so.

Frankly I don't see some JV player from 80-81 being plugged in to what is happening between Johnny & Phil in 92. And don't see ole Johnny making Phil O Coordinator in 89 if there was that much tension between the two then. jmo

I'm glad you got to see Coach Kirk and talk football ... but must we really stir up all this other mess again?

I get your point. He was a coach btw, not a player and I think that's what you meant. I don't believe the guy was only there for 3 years and he said coached DL, and was there in the mid 80's but remained in touch with Fulmer even after he left and even to this day. Where did you find info that he was only there during the years mentioned? I looked online for a while and couldn't find anything about him, which was the main point of this thread.

Really didn't want to stir anything mess up about those two, mainly just goin' on about some of the topic of conversation. We talked about many other things. In hindsight, I guess I should have left out all of the Fulmer/Majors crap, as some of you, like myself, are so anxious for football you are driven crazy about subject matter that has been re-hased over and over and over again in the same forum. Bad judgement call on my part I suppose.

Media guide shows only the JV 80-81 then the Admin Media post & nothing after 83. In 92 only the true insiders knew what was going on between Johnny, Phil and Doug. . .no VN or computer boards to pass the dope around to us schmoes.

Majors may be all Vol but he was a drunk. Recruited a kid by the name of Rodney Ballard and fell asleep drunk on his parents couch. They asked him to leave. Let's move on.
