the crying about the death of the big east.

i don't remember this much pain and grief with the death of the swc and the big 8.

the league is less than 35 years old. i can't help but enjoy the irony of people being sad about the loss of the league because of its history and tradition when a school that was in the league for 5 minutes goes out the winner of the tourney.

chances are if you compete in division 1 athletics, you were a member of the big east at some point. although we don't know which sport you actually competed in.

a league dumb enough to deny penn state inclusion into the league in 1982.

yeah, i liked some of the basketball matchups. very few were of the syracuse-georgetown original member variety.

but, give me a break

I personally didn't care about the conference. They had some very good teams but outside of basketball they were basically non existent. You have that many teams in a conference of course you seem like the top conference.

I think a big part of this is social media. The big 8 and southwest conference didn't have the constant coverage like today. Remember the butler basketball scandal a few years ago? that was an enormous deal. How much media coverage did it get really? Imagine if that happened now.

That's the difference I believe.

I hate it. I'm not a fan of the BE but I love basketball and those guys know how to play it and they always have sick matchups. I don't like how some schools will play football in one league and play basketball in another. So dumb.

Do you mean Baylor?

I could really care less about the conference, but as a basketball junkie I have always had a love for the yearly Cuse/Hoyas/UConn/Louisville/WVU matchups. And as much as it pains me to agree with Rick Pitino, the Big East tourney at MSG is one of the best events in CBB. Best tournament to watch outside of the NCAA.

I will definitely miss that portion.

or schools that don't play D-1 football sharing a basketball conference with schools that do

I liked the bball conf, and tourney was always great.
But they were primarily overblown due to their geographic local.
I used to hate when they compared Big East BBALL to SEC fball. SEC was winning titles and going multiple other BCS games, while stocking the NFL with talent.
Big East won with UCONN and the CUSE in 03 and have sent a decent amount of players to the NBA, but I would say over the past ten years the SEC is right there with them with NBA 1st round picks

The popularity of the Big East launched ESPN's coverage of college basketball in the early 80s, so I understand the fuss.

I'm just not all that choked up about it.

I was watching the Ninja Turtles in the 80's so I have no idea about that. BUT I can see how this would of been.

I know Louisville and 'Cuse won't be there but the tournament will be at MSG with G'town, Providence, St. Johns, Seton Hall, Villanova, DePaul, Marquette along with Butler, Creighton, and Xavier.

It will still be a premier basketball conference.
