He said our goal is to average over 30 points a game. Do you think that is a reasonable goal?

I guess it sounds better than averaging 3 points a game. If we can score 30 points a game, we'll win a lot of ball games.

Or better than we'll score just enough to win/lose and rely on our defense until we wear them down at the end of the season.

At this point I could care less about ppg. I just want to see our offense cut down on stupid penalties and look like they actually know what they are supposed to be doing and that they actually prepared for the game the week before. With Cut I know this will happen. We may not have a juggernaut of an offense, but at least we won't look like a pop warner squad out there.

When Ainge was a freshmen UT didnt score more then 30 points unless they were playing Vandy, Kentucky, etc. So I would say its ambitious. That's probably what Cut has decided UT needs to score to win the SEC with UT's defense next season.

That being the operative phrase there. It might be wishful thinking, but I seriously doubt Cut is planning on Ainge playing like a Freshman again.

the operative word here is "goal." If you don't aim high then you don't have anywhere to go.

I'd rather see him play like a freshman vs. a sophomore :birgits_giggle:

If we get 30 plus a game we will be in the BCSCG.

I know some are worried about our D. But Chief will have our D ready. We lost talent on the line but have a ton of talent. If our LB's are ready we will be fine on D.

We averaged 30+ in 2000 and 2001. So, no, if we avg 30+ this season, we won't be HAVE TO BE in the BCSCG.

I think that if we average that high we will. I don't see that big of a drop on our D. Give us 30 plus last year and where do we finish?

I like the fact that he has put a goal out there. Someone willing to be accountable to a standard they have set is always a good thing. We need some candor regarding the expectations of the coaching staff.

We have plenty of offensive talent to move the ball down the field, it seems to me that it is the mental part of the game (nods to Yogi Berra) that we have to get right this year in order to achieve that goal.

I agree. If our WR's can make the plays and help out a struggling QB it is amazing the turn around that can happen to the QB. Ive seen it time and again, a QB is struggling and makes a few bad passes. Then the WR makes a couple really good catches and the whole demeanor of the team changes.

i remember Sanders once saying the past that our goal was 20ppg and he only got that half the time so i hope Cut is right in this, that would be awesome.

Half the time?

2000: 31.7 ppg
2001: 30.8 ppg
2002: 22.8 ppg
2003: 28.1 ppg
2004: 29.1 ppg
2005: 18.6 ppg

What you're showing is the average number of points per game. However, the real question is in what percentage of our games under Sanders did we score over 20 points per game. That would be a much more important figure than the average points scored per game because games against Vanderbilt and Kentucky where UT is usually able to run up the score, as well as multiple overtime games against Arkansas and Alabama skew the average points per game. I'm not implying that your figures are wrong. I'm just saying that those figures aren't all that important. Furthermore, it would be really interesting to see the percentage of games that we scored over 20 points against the tougher SEC opponents (Georgia, Florida, Auburn, LSU, and Alabama).

From 2001-2005, we scored under 20 points 18 games out of 51. Not sure about 1999 or 2000. Still, nowhere near half.

yeah, it's reasonable, and i'm glad he came out and said that we have a goal....it makes accountablity much easier.

Now is it acheivable? proabably not, at least consistently anyway....but if you don't set high goals, you'll never get close to where you want to be....

Coach Cut's goal this season is for his offense to score at least 30 points each game. That sounds like a realistic goal, but after watching last years offense, it is hard to picture. He will probably have to reach that goal against Cal with our young defense. Lets hope he can pull through!!
