Anyone remember the "3 to make 2" foul rule?

If a team was over the limit and committed a backcourt foul, the team that was fouled would get 3 foul shots to make 2. I think this would be a good addition to the game after the foul limit to discourage the tedious last 3 minutes of a game that has gotten out of hand. This was used in the NBA from the late 50s to early 80s

NBA. For penalizing teams that were over the then existing team foul maximum. It was crap, frankly.

That wasn’t college. But I think that teams used to get 1 free throw when they were fouled and then when the 7th foul was committed they’d get two. A “bonus”.

Nah, this would screw road teams even more than they are already getting screwed. I do remember that. I actually watched NBA when I was a kid. It was about the teams and not the individuals back then.

I agree 1,000% that something needs to be done to prevent the last two minutes of a game from taking 20 minutes to play. It’s painful to watch, especially when ESPN allots two hours for a game and they routinely run 15-20 minutes over.

Wait… you think that ADDING a free throw is going to shorten the end of games? What? That wouldn’t deter teams from fouling down late - the fouls are of no risk at all to them. They’re taking a chance that the other team may miss a FT and give them a chance to gain a point at the other end. That would continue the fouling AND make the games longer. Insanity.

I wasn’t saying the 3-to-make-2 was the way to do it. I don’t know what the solution is, but the last two minutes shouldn’t take 20 minutes. I doubt the extra free throw would make a difference. If a team feels like they need to foul to have a chance, they’ll foul either way. I wouldn’t mind it if each team got fewer timeouts and maybe only one could be taken in the last two minutes of the game.

All they need to do is to call intentional fouls. 2 free throws AND the ball. Refs no longer even consider a late foul to be intentional when that’s exactly what most of them are. Or even give 2 free throws and the ball on every foul in the final 2 minutes.

It’ll never happen though. ESPN gets to run more commercials with all of the fouls, time outs, and reviews at the end of games. Accommodating the viewers will reduce their revenue.

Edit: another approach could be to award 2 free throws AND the ball when the total number of fouls exceeds 15/20 (or 12/15 in the half) or so and the game is in the final 2 minutes.

ESPN makes millions of dollars off of advertising on this, viewership goes way up during this time frame by double . The teams fans that are watching the foul parade and the teams Fans watching hoping it will get over so they can watch their team. Then ESPN can crunch the numbers and tell potential future advertisers that during this 30 minute time slot viewership goes up astronomically and we have to charge more.

That last approach would make Purdue unbeatable

The best way to handle this problem is to enforce the rule that has been around for several years - the intentional foul rule. It is ridiculous the way this rule is ignored. Most especially near the end of games.
Maybe let the team choose to keep possession rather than shot fouls.

They can add a rule that any player over 7’2” is fair game and excluded from the free throws. Why not? They took away Lew Alcindor’s dunks.

But seriously, I said in the last two minutes. Reaching a foul threshold earlier would just be 2 free throws in that idea.

I like the intentional foul with possession retained. Well, except in games where we need to come from behind late.
