It sounds like the ref screwed up when he said they would defer when they actually said they would kick. But, I didn't see it myself and am questioning whether LSU would choose "kick" and not "defer." It seems odd that LSU would want to kickoff for both halves.
I thought that meant they would receive in the second half, so it was automatic that they would kick off in the first:crazy:LSU won the toss - defered
OSU then has the option of choosing to kick/receive and LSU the option of choosing which side they'll defend.
Actually if they'd wanted to I think OSU has the option to pick a side to play at and then LSU the option to kick/receive. You don't get to choose both kick/receive and which side.
I'm not sure why you're faulting the ref, nothing was done incorrectly.:fool::drool:
That's what I thought...so it was a goof by ohio captain!!!I didn't pay attention to the coin toss, but I would think if LSU won the toss and chose to defer, that means 'to the 2nd half'. Obviously, if they chose to receive the ball in the 2nd half, they would be kicking it away in the 1st; meaning... Ohio STATE should have been choosing endzones, not the already determined fact that they would receive.
That's exactly what defer means. You are deferring your choice to the beginning of the second half but not even making a choice of kicking or receiving at that time. That gives the other team the choice of the opening kickoff (whether to kick the ball or receive it). Naturally, if they have any sense, they will receive the kickoff because if they choose to kick the ball then the team deferring their choice to the second half kickoff chooses to receive to start the second half, then they would get the ball to start both halves.. Simple huh?Defer doesn't mean receive in the second half. Defer means choose first in the second half.
