University of Alabama athletes among nation's top beneficiaries of special admissions, records review finds | Sports from The Birmingham News - al.com

This is an interesting story that talks about how certain schools use an admissions exception rule to get athletes into school and how Alabama has been profiting from it. If you will notice about two-thirds down it lists the schools that do not use exceptions.

"Six schools besides Texas reported no use of special admissions on campus: Air Force, Connecticut, Kansas State, Purdue, Tennessee and Virginia."

The reason that I am listing this is because there are some fans from other SEC programs that deny that they use exceptions to get athletes into their programs.

If Georgia has higher academic standards than all of the other SEC schools, with the exception of Vanderbilt, they must use an admission exception rule. They are not listed by the NCAA as a school that does not use special admissions.

Point is that Georgia does not lose players to other SEC schools because of academic standards as some of their fans like to claim.

I wonder if Alabama has done like FSU and let kids with IQs of 70 into school.

Thanks, that is what happens when you post and watch football on TV at the same time. I corrected it.

There must be some limits, because it definitely seems like Notre Dame suffers in this area, and they are apparently an "exception" school.

Where are the UGA fans that were saying they had a disadvantage? I guess they are still out there looking for a defensive coordinator.

The one thing I found interesting was Miss St. They said basically athletes had no advantage. I do not think the article otherwise reallyhas no merit. Everyone knows at certian schools athletes get advantages. Like the article said along as the athlete meets the NCAA requirments it does not matter. In the end it is really based on the the graduation rate of the athletes. The one thing from the article I would take is that the more special admissions giving out would seem to indicate the more resources allocated to those athletes to assure they are successful, but if the athletic program makes enough money to self sustain this like all SEC schools do then it does not hurt the non-athletic students.

Also it said Texas doesn't really have a academic requirement to get in. They look at each person individually. The problem with most school academic requirments, they are set up to help filter out people for enrollment. Not really based on their work in the classroom as much as to quickly just disqualify students to help sort through the number of applications, especially with the increase in students applying. I read an article over the summer that because of the economy and the number of people now trying to go to college that it is etimated that schools across the board will increase their academic requirments to get accepted by 20%.

SAT's are significant, but ACT's are used by more schools in the conference. That data would be more relevant. Most of the athletes only take the ACT.
