It is going to take an Alpha-Coach to handle this team. Not necessarily a male coach, but without a doubt, an Alpha coach.
:good!:
And, as much as I love Kellie Jean, it might take a Becky Hammon to whip this team into shape. She's never run a program, but right now a firm hand with street cred at all levels (college, Olympics, WNBA,
NBA) would be a big plus if she could assemble a staff familiar with the intricacies of running a program (scheduling, recruiting, academic discipline & oversight, conflict resolution, etc.) to help.
Whether people would accept an unproven (at college level) coach or whether she'd even be interested (although she'd love to make history at the NBA level, that's still a long shot & she at least might be able to right the ship while getting head coaching experience...and might just find that she loves the job and can be very successful at restoring the program).
Others might balk at leaving a comfortable job and successful program, but Hammon will be available and might welcome the challenge.
She might not be everyone's ideal candidate, but how many would rather maintain the status quo? I'd think that she could help coach up the guards (one of our most glaring weaknesses), instill a toughness that's lacking, kick some candy butts if needed, get great PR for the program and maybe turn some recruits' heads back in our direction. And she'd have a year to show that she can turn around a group of talented players (and might retain any of them having second thoughts) to help with recruiting.
Holly has had a great run over her 30+ year career, but sometimes a change of scenery is best for all concerned. Rick Barnes didn't have any trouble landing the UT job after getting his pink slip, so Holly should be able to land on her feet elsewhere if her skills are as appreciable as touted by her defenders. No one wants to leave on a sour note, but the powers that be have to decide whether it's better to make a change or stay the course and hope for a huge improvement (at this point, the sky's the limit). The program could improve, just stabilize, or we might not have seen the bottom of the well yet.
