When Bruce Pearl was hired I immediately began to complain about him. Thinking he was a small market coach that would be out of his league in the SEC. I also stated I would eat crow if I was wrong...and boy was I wrong. This man can coach with anyone in the county. I have not seen anyone bring such intensity and fire to a TN program in years. I will forever be a supportor of Bruce no matter what the record. Hopefully Phil can learn a lesson that you can do something with less and once Bruce gets a true recruiting season under his belt...watch out.

Good post, except for one thing...Why did you have to take the shot at Fulmer in there?

You should get behind our guys from the beginning because they are our guys, period. Don't be fair weather and at the end of a successful season start up with the, 'now I will support Bruce forever' nonsense. Bruce might have a down year next year, you gonna jump off the wagon then?

I agree dont be a fair weather fan and jump off. I have followed the team and gone to all home games even during the O'Neil era, and the disasters that came after that. We had a little light during Green but nothing like this year. And the Fulmer shot was unneeded. I can understand not supporting a new coach, but you still have to support the players.

I'm sure many people on this board was skeptical of Pearl and won't admit it. What's important is that we back this team and show them the kind of support that will possibly launch this program into the upper echleon.

Everyone needs to be honest. I, and I think most of us, have been sceptical of any coach that has come to Vols. We have not been able to draw the big name who has been able to have success at other programs. Bruce was one of those coaches, just like the last umpteen, that came to Tennessee after having success building up a small program. When he came I thought that we had another guy that would give it a shot for couple years and fall back on the excuse like all the others that UT couldn't get players becuase we are a football school.

Bruce has talked the talk and backed it up. He has everyone's backing because they are playing well and having success. I am impresesed with his level of intensity, ability to motivate, and just plain coaching ability. He will continue to have success and hope it is with the big Orange.

As for Phil, some will be eating more crow hopefully in the fall. Leave some room at the Tennessee buffet.

show me one over the top head coach like Pearl in college football today
Depends on how you define "over the top." If you mean from an intensity and enthusiasm perspective, I'd put both Stoops brothers, Carroll, Orgeron, and in a stange way, Ralph Friedgen on the list.

Right, I will believe that you didn't support Fulmer when we won the NC in '98 or the SEC Championships. As far as the guaranteed wins at the end of the year...In that last 4 years, our final 3 games have included Miami or Notre Dame.

Fulmer has one bad season (8-4 is above average, especially in the SEC) and then you come out and say you don't support him.

Stay in NC and follow your Heels, and Roy, where the players dictate who they want as a coach. Great precedent UNC set on that one.
What, hire a good coach and win a championship? I think that's exactly the kind of precedent you want to set.

lets get back to bruce that is what the off-topic thing was for. I wish one person could make a basketball thread without bashing fulmer in it.

Actually, you're right. I forgot about the off topic thread. Got caught up responding to what I read.

Yes, they did hire a good coach and win a championship. However, I think the way they got rid of Dougherty was flat out wrong. Players shouldn't control the program. Also, and I am not taking anything away from Roy Williams, I think most coaches (with that senior talent) could have just thrown a ball on the court, said go play, and rode that talent to the Final Four...

I'm never one to criticize a school for firing someone who is clearly in over his head. Dougherty was in no way ready for a job the caliber of Carolina. He may develop into a big time coach, but UNC isn't somewhere you should be learning on the job.

Hey, Man. I sat through games during the Wade Houston era. :yuck:

No one is more excited than me about the current state of Vol BBall. Go Vols! :yahoo:

U guys want to bash a guy for apologizing? That my friend is integrity. It takes a man to own up and admit he was wrong. It does not take a man to kick him while he is down.

I disagree. Bobby "The Brain" Heenan was right. Of course you kick a man when he's down, it's much easier that way.

I think it is because a lot of the fans are too young to have the perspective needed to see the bigger picture. I was a Gator fan when they went on probation and then Galen Hall took over. I can therefore appreciate the success even of a Ron Zook whereas anyone under the age of 35 thinks anything short of Spurrieresque success is grounds for bulldozing Florida Filed and starting over again.

Props to you for the apology. The true test though is going to be what happens the first time Pearl hits a rough patch and misses the tournament. Not directing this at you . . . . but it's really easy to be a Pearl fan right now. It's sort of like being a fan of air freshener in an outhouse.
