Will top ten recruiting classes be enough to compete at the level that we are all wanting Tennessee to compete at? Or is it going to take top five type classes? Is there really that much difference in top five and top ten? What are your thoughts on this?

It takes player development and getting the players you need.

The rankings are nothing if you don't do anything with it.

Yes it is, the difference between the #1 class and #10 clas is interpretation. It's the coaching one in the door that will make them or break them.

Takes top 5 just to keep up and a top 3-1 class to get where we want.

Long way to go.

100% agreed and you have to know how to utilize each player the their best abilities as well...

thats why kiffin didn't go after the best recruiters for his staff..... the best coaches and recruiters.....

Top five would be great. IMHO though even top ten is not necessary if you get the players you want and need to run your system.

As long as they're top 10 classes when they leave school.
Agreed. Freshmen are unknowns (at the next level) and may or may not pan out. Walk-ons may become first round draft picks. You never know.

I wonder what the 98 team was ranked pre and post career?

What? No one wins the Kentucky Derby with ponies. A walk on first rounder is almost unheard of.

The difference between top 5 and being 10th in recruiting could matter or not. If you are taking a full class then being 10th is not good. If you are only taking 20 or so players, being 10th would be find. We lost TONS of players when Kiffin took over and cut the fat and the lazy out. We need upgrades at almost every position. Having a top 10 class with 27-8 guys does not cut it.

We will have a class that is top 5 definitely.

If we finish with a stud WR
3 stud OL
a stud LB
a stud safety
and Miller and Ambles and Taylor get ratings bumps, we will be top 3.

Coaches > recruiting...ex: Boise St aka BCS busters
yes coaching is more important than recruiting but with their rosters Boise State would not be in BCS bowls if they were in a power conference. playing a couple tough games a year is a far different reality than a gauntlet.

to compete for championships you need high levels of each.

Can't take anything away from Boise's program.

I for one think that they are a legit team.

They are the reason we need a playoff system.

Saban and Meyer are setting the mark very high. It is up to us to follow-up, or fall-off. Top ten ain't good enough if they are top-3, and they are both developers of talent, which they both are. The Boise St. coach 'em model does not work in the SEC. The best team wins here. I would say the best team has won the SEC Championship game every year except us in 2001.

Rankings mean little, Va Tech averages 18th in rankings and have won at least 10 games the past 6 seasons. Coaching the players up means alot more than rankings.

You made me have to look things up and I hate to do that. In the recruiting ranking from 2007-2009, according to Scout, Boise St finished between 57th-64th each year. They were still able to beat Oklahoma and TCU in BCS games. They also beat Oregon in a regular season game earlier this year. The may not be able to run a full SEC schedule because of depth but if they were to get a top 20 recruiting classes they would be fine. They wouldn't have to be in the top 5 every year. Coaching makes the difference. Every player in the NFL was one of the best in college but some teams lose year after year. Athletes are just one piece to the puzzle.
