Are we practicing today?

Josh Heupel
- Excited to get back to work. We've had a great summer. Have been extremely competitive. Individuals have gotten better.

-We've come a long ways in a short amount of time.

-Just great competition everywhere. Our athleticism is really starting to show.

-on staff continuity: The people we've promoted have been within the building, so we haven't had to start from scratch. It's really important where we took this program over in trying to build something. We haven't had to completely reset.

-on Aaron Beasley: He's a guy that hadn't played a lot of football, but he grew within a role as a football player last season and has continued to grow as a leader. He is part of our leadership council and has great great command of that linebacker room.

-on Keenan Pili: He's a guy that this summer took a huge step in having command of the guys in that room. I think the leadership of those guys will begin to show as we get into training camp.

-Heup thinks there's great competition along the offensive line, especially at tackle. Backup center will be a competition, too.

-says linebacker Kwauze Pakk Garland won't be playing this fall because he's been unable to recover from an injury he dealt with last season.

-on the quarterbacks: I expect Joe and Nico both to compete and lead at a high level. It's important that they lead with urgency.

-on the edge rushers: We felt like we made some real strides at the end of spring at that position. This time of year you have to show you can master what you're doing and go take a job. It's your job to prove you can play at a championship level and then it's our job to find a place for them to play.

-on the corners: We're really excited about the five guys that came in, in January and appreciated the way they approached things in a mature manner. The vets a year ago were knicked up throughout the season. We need them to stay healthy. You can't be the player you need to be if you're not practicing this time of year.

-on entering year three: Guys know what they're getting into, our staff has been able to stay intact for the most part and now you're able to go out and compete on a daily basis.

-on Joey Halzle stepping in as OC: It's been a seamless transition. Excited about what he's done up to this point.

-said some of his favorite moments with his team this offseason have been him beating them up on the basketball court.

-on how different the linebacker room is today compared to when they got here: Length, athleticism, accountability every single day, understanding what the job is. We were really think year one and we've added competition and athleticism. BJ has done a great job of recruiting that room.

-on Alec Abeln and Kelsey Pope: Great energy and have dynamic personalities. They understand what we want to do offensively. Two great young coaches who we love having in the building.

Tim Banks to the podium next.

Tim Banks
-asked why he thinks defenses are struggling against Tennessee's offense: It starts with personnel and we've had great quarterback play. And our offensive line and running backs don't get enough credit. Then of course you factor in the great minds with our coaches.

-Going up against our offense in practice gives us the confidence to go up against anybody in the country.

-on Aaron Beasley: As the spotlight started to shift towards him, he's become more comfortable. He's been great as a leader and has developed more of a voice. People listen to him because of the production he has had.

-on Keenan Pili: Tremendous young man. Big, athletic, psychical. Not very vocal, but as he becomes more comfortable, he'll become more comfortable. Our team really respects him with the way he works.

-When we got here, Aaron was just transitioning to linebacker. He is quiet, but has a quiet confidence. We knew pretty quickly we could count on him. Nothing has been given. Everything has been earned, which makes it sweeter for me.

-on the cornerback competition: The added bodies will help a ton. All of those guys are healthy and I think there's talent, too. Having those guys back with experience can really help. Going into the season with two corners isn't ideal. In a perfect world we need five.

-We just want to be consistent with our play. We want to play hard, play tough and not beat ourselves.

-on Roman Harrison: Roman has played a lot of football for us. Byron Young will be greatly missed, but Roman has flashed. He's pound-for-pound one of the toughest guys in the SEC. He just needs to play a little smarter and we saw him get better in the spring with our system and play more consistently.

-on Omar Norman-Lott: Omar has been a big get for us. He has a quick first step and I think he can be good for us against the run, but we also think he'll be able to help us in the pass game. We think he can be really productive in our system.

-Our defense knows what we bring to the table. You can't win 11 games without playing good defense. We don't worry about who gets credit. But our goal is to win championships, so we need to continue to get better.

Joey Halzle next to the podium

Joey Halzle
-on Joe Milton: His attention to detail is elite. He came back from that Clemson game even hungrier. It's a special mindset that the kid has and it's fun to be around.

-on the relationship between Joe Milton and Nico Iamaleava: It's like a big brother, little brother relationship. You rarely see Joe without Nico.

-It's rare to be in the building and not see Ramel Keyton on the juggs machine.

-on how different his job is now as OC: The biggest difference is the setup for the day. I have to make sure it makes sense for everybody and not just the quarterbacks. It's no longer me taking in info and applying.

-Joe Milton III's size and athleticism means the QB run game will be different from the Hendon Hooker era, but that Milton's size and athleticism allows him to design and call "a lot of fun stuff" in that way.

-on the confidence in Nico if he has to play early in the season: Huge confidence in him. That guy didn't come in like a true freshman. His calmness, his demeanor — I think the guys believe in him at a high level.

-on Bru McCoy: I feel like he's going to make a huge jump this season.

-on why Josh Heupel is so good: He doesn't stray from who he is and he also allows himself to think of new ways to do things. He's going to stay true to who he is, but he's going to make sure it makes sense for everybody.

-on Ramel Keyton: He can track a deep ball at a really high level. And he can run because of how long he strides.

-on the tight end room: You rarely see Jacob (Warren) without McCallan (Castles). He can run and it's fun to see that type of skill set in the offense when they just go play and not think. He's added about 15 pounds and looks great.

I just take it as he wants them to be THE leaders on that side of the ball. He wants them to lead at all times and do it with some pep in their step.

Sucks to hear that about Pak Garland. He was primed to get snaps last year, so I figured he'd give us some depth this year. Just as he earned a scholarship he got hurt bad. Damn.

No questions gor Halzle about Dont'e Thornton?

The coaches are looking for driven, full-speed leadership, not a more laid back style.

1690913458566.jpeg versus 1690913487690.jpeg

Matthew McConaughey in the Lincoln Lawyer or Dazed and Confused (alright, alright, alright): that's a laid back style of leadership. Don't sweat anything, just sit back and let life come at you.

On the flip side, any movie Jason Statham has ever been in where he leads others, that's a more intense, urgent style of leadership.

One is happy to take what life gives. The other knows exactly what he wants and goes after it non-stop.

The coaches are saying they want the latter out of the team's leaders.

Go Vols!

p.s. Heupel himself leads with good-natured urgency.

What does this mean?

To engage others, be focused, don't play with anxiety or create stress for yourself or others

Stay greedy, build habits, and reap the rewards.
