Are we still 4-5 years from relevance?

I remember when Kiffin bolted and everyone said he had set us back by 3 years. Well, it's been 3 years, and we don't seem to be much better off now than we were then.

We're coming off a losing season, recruiting is in shambles, and we are looking for another coach.

So, how long until we can make a run at the East, provided we hire a decent coach? 2015 season at the earliest?

Maybe but probably not. What is your definition of relevance? 12-0 or competing in games with 8-10 win seasons? The right coach (which there are many) can get it back fairly quickly I think.

2060-65 most likely, this seems like the most logical year for our return to prominence. It gives our coach a decent amount of time to recruit and get his players in the system.

You don't have a very good memory if you really think that. Dooley did not make enough progress or win games and was correctly fired.

HOWEVER, he leaves one of the best OL's in the SEC and country. With or without Bray he leaves at least two SEC caliber QB's. Poole was the only effective back that DD inherited. Neal and Lane made a decent duo. WR is a matter of who leaves and who doesn't but the cupboard is not completely barren of talent even with out CP and JH.

DD inherited not a single SEC worthy DT. Assuming UT goes back to the 4-3, he leaves at a minimum Couch, Big McCullers, Saulsberry, Sentimore, and O'Brien. At DE you have Willams, Miller, Walls, Smith, and probably Maggitt. There is talent in the secondary. LB is a sore spot but no worse than it was 3 years ago.

Plus.... there's a recruiting class that can further shore the skill positions and LB up.

UT is MUCH better off than they were 3 years ago.

Recruiting is a shambles because we're looking for a new coach. Make the right hire, finish strong, and move forward. This class is nowhere near as critical as the one DD had to finish to the near term success of the program.

Hire the right coach and get the right DC.... and make a run at the East next year. It all starts on the line of scrimmage. UT has the potential to be very good on both sides.

As of today, I'm thinking no. 8-10 years, maybe.

This makes absolutely no sense. I am not saying it won't be that long only that you think more than one recruiting cycle is necessary.... when not even one full 4 year cycle is truly needed with the right coaching staff.

Now if you are calculating in the impatience of the fanbase and likelihood that the next guy even if he's good might get canned before turning the corner... maybe you have a point.

At a major program like UT, if you get the right coach you can compete at a national championship level in 3-4 years.

Could be the most reasonable post in a year. Strong, golden, briles, etc could do this

Even golden

Yep, 3-4 yrs. at the least. When we fired Phil I said we would suck for a decade. And I stand by that. Hamilton and all the Kiffin/Dooley lovers be damned. Should have let Phil decide who and when he was gonna step down and replace him. UT deserves all the sucky seasons we will endure due to our idiot AD Dept. and hyper fans. Congratulations.

The great thing about college football is that we can be relevant next year. As long as we get a good coach, a good recruiting class and somebody that can develop talent we can be in the mix much sooner than people think. However all of that does hinge on a good, well established coach.

I tend to agree with you on this. You know, for a very short time at the start of this past season. UT was nearly very much relevant. Back in the top 25, Neyland Stadium rockin like it was the 90's again and it was a good feeling... Then the 2nd half of the FL game started and the whole deal went to hell in a handbasket.

I want a good coach to come in here and get UT back to relevancy and in a position to be in the hunt in every game it plays. But honestly I dont feel like it would take neccesarily take Jon Gruden to get it done. It wouldnt have taken a much better coach than Dooley to been there this past season.

The reason it didn't happen in 3 years is because the Hammy hired an unqualified doofus to replace Kiffin.

Unless the right hire is made it could be many years before Tennessee is competing for championships again.
The rest of the conference to too strong with even Vandy and Miss State being legit now. This hire must be well planned and thought through.

A solid coach could get Tennessee back to being respectable.. As far as the other stuff who knows.. These days you win the SEC you usually play for it all..
