Argue the merits of Bruce Pearl (merged)

I'll be willing to bet I have donated more money to the UTAD than you made as a salary in 2008....

And you would very much win that bet because i'm a college student who makes minimum wage. You're an idiot. We aren't even talking about money right now are we....But im sorry you are the time type of person who thinks they can hide behind their money. Then you proceed to talk crap about the coach because you "think you can" BECAUSE you donated that money. Pearl is a winner....Pearl is the best coach in the SEC. Pearl is one of the best coaches in the nation. I will stand by that because look at what buzz peterson did to this program. Three years later....hmmm look at it.

What has Bruce Pearl done to the program to deserve the high billing from yourself?

+1, and if he ever left I couldn't wear my ' Got Pearl' shirt anymore. It's one of my favorites! Lol

So because he isn't cheerleading and drinking the kool-Aid, he's an idiot... Your opinion is based solely on what has gone on at UT in the last several years. There are a lot of great coaches that have turned around schools and built successful programs around the country. To say that Pearl is one of the greatest coaches in the country because he got Tennessee to the sweet 16 a couple of times, won his division in the fourth(?) worst league in the country, and has "passion and school spirit" isn't very reasonable. He's a good coach. He's not in the top 10 of greatest coaches, though. Not really in the top 20.

I'm new to the nation, but was the Pearl hatred by some always here, or did it arise from a few unwanted losses this year?

Mine started the day he was hired. However I was not aware of the Nation at that moment and couldn't announce my displeasure.

The incident from 20 years ago (when he was at Iowa) seems to still be fresh in many people's minds. That could contribute to it some.

It's not really hatred. It's just not having a high opinion of him as a coach. I tend to agree. IP hit it on the head with his comment.

Bruce Pearl understands what UT basketball is. I sit and watch every single UT basketball game. Sometimes from section 120 or from my lazyboy. The man has more passion than any coach in basketball. He's always always coaching. He does not sit down. He has one of the youngest teams in basketball and he is still going to make the NCAA tourney. I guess what pisses me off so bad is the fact that people get on here and talk about how bad of a coach he is because of this years record. We're young. We're immature. This team is just now hitting its stride minus the bama game last sunday. I guess I'm just a firm believer in bruce pearl. I've met him and I can honestly say he has great passsion for the university and is a great coach. He is always selling the program to students around UT. He is always out selling his basketball team to fans. He's always on the strip and he always takes the time to talk to his fans and students.

To whom does the responsibility fall on to make sure the team matures?

Some fans are going to bi_ch if you hang them with a new rope. When the weather {wins and loses} changes so will the fair weather fans. I also think CBP has done an excelent job and we as fans should support that, win or lose.

How is not proclaiming him one of the best coaches in the country indicative of not supporting him or the team? I am not going to fall to my knees for anybody. I have never been into hero worship. Sorry.

Passion can only take you so far. I appreciate how passionate he is, and I like him as a person, but I have reservations about him as a coach. I wouldn't say that he's a bad coach, but saying that he is one of the best in the nation is asinine.

You want a good example of how to coach a young team? Bill Self has done it this year.

I sure like where this program is right now, compared to where it has been for the majority of my life.At least we are talking about NCAA tournaments and SEC east titles now.WE can always go back to the way it was,if that would make people happy!

"Best" ultimately is a subjective term that must encompass recruiting, how far you can take your talent ,etc. Pearl is a very good coach--and he has done great things for UT, whose basketball program spent 20 years in the CRAPPER before he arrived. He has brought energy and passion to the Vols, and gotten us noticed. The media likes him, and all that should help with recruiting. Can he make UT more than, say, a Sweet 16 type program--meaning good but not great. Probably not, IMO. The big powers in the Big East and ACC, plus Memphis and Mich. State and a couple of others, snatch up most of the true blue-chip talent every year, leaving another 20 second-tier teams like UT to scramble for the few who don't chose Chapel Hill or Storrs or Louisville. The SEC is a football conference and dominates football recruiting. The Big East and ACC are basketball conferences, and dominate bb recruiting. But Pearl has been a boon for the Vols.

You mean the way it was Devoe's first five years? Jerry Green's four years? The fact people are fooled by body paint and self tanner into thinking Pearl is an elite coach shows why "American Idol" and "Wife Swap" have large audiences.

Pearl is a great salesmen
Pearl is a good recruiter
Pearl is not a good coach.

It's that easy.

Eh, he's a good coach. He turned the UT program around pretty immediately, and he did win a conference championship last year. The problem is that people aren't satisfied with calling him that; they think that if you don't think he's up there with Knight and Krzyzewski, then you're not a "real fan." He's pretty clearly not a coach that is ever going to take any program deep in the tournament on a regular basis.

I quit with the sports hero-worship at about the same time I discovered girls. A lot of Vol fans apparently never figured that out.

I am right with you.

This post is dead on, as yours usually are.

I think he is a good basketball coach and probably the best one that we could have here, but the best in the nation is a stretch. This year has pushed his ability to coach and his players willingness to accept coaching. If both learn from the lessons, UT could continue to improve over the years. I have no love or hate for the guy, but appreciate what he has done for UT basketball and hope he can bring us some more excitement over the years. UT fans have a tendency to get spoiled quickly. I take them for what they are worth and enjoy the games as I can.
