Church Vows To Protest Victims' Funerals - Valley News Story - KPHO Phoenix

Quote:
"The Arizona Legislature approved emergency legislation to head off picketing by Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., at the funeral services, specifically that of a 9-year-old girl who was killed during Saturday's shooting.

Early Wednesday, a church spokesman said the church agreed to not protest Green's funeral in exchange for radio interviews on two radio stations, including one in Phoenix.

Unanimous votes by the House and Senate on Tuesday sent the bill to Gov. Jan Brewer for her signature.

The bill prohibits protests at or near funeral sites and takes takes effect immediately."

This group that calls themselves a church simply promotes hate. Actions like these give religion a bad name. I don't see anythiong religious about all these protest they do.

Good for the AZ State Government.

Not to give this bunch too much credit, but this is the best move for this situation.

Wonder when the ACLU or some other group will challenge this legislation? I would imagine it is Constitutionally shaky.

I don't think capitulating with these guys to give them a wider audience just so they won't do the monstrous act of protesting a 9 year old's funeral is the best move.

Someone posted yetserday it's been modeled after an Ohio law that the 6th district has upheld. Of coruse, AZ is also in the 9th so there is very little to no chance it would be upheld there if it was challenged.

Wow, the WBC just forced legislation. I don't care how you look at it... their weight is scary for such a small group of nutjobs.

Just goes to the show the things we'll do when emotions mix with policy.

It doesn't surprise me that Jan Brewer is going to pass this. She is an idiot.

It may hold up. It does not ban them protesting .

From: Arizona shootings: 'Funeral protection zone' bill signed by Brewer
Senate Bill 1101 creates a "funeral protection zone" that bans protesters within 300 feet of a funeral service. The ban applies to one hour before, during or after a funeral service. A violation is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Everyone needs to calm the F down. there are already new gun control, speech, etc. rules being floated in Congress. Way to soon to legislate based on this tragedy.

Not even too soon... this type of legislation should never pass because of headcases like the WBC. It's an outright pathetic move by AZ.

I imagine it is.

As untouchable as I find the FA to the BoR, I think if this is an emergency situation calling a time-out for a month or so, I could probably stomach it and call it good democracy in action.

Otherwise, I think the ACLU would be doing a good service in taking it off the books by force in a month or so.

What the hell would they be protesting at her funeral anyway?

I could handle letting them rally, round them up and euthanize them

Westboro BC considers that girl's murder punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuals

In my best Johnny Test voice: "Say what?"

if you are familiar with how to use Google, or some other internet search engine, type in the words "Westboro Baptist Church" into the little box, press enter, and educate yourself about WBC and it's psychotic leader, the right Reverend Fred Phelps.
