This is probably completely insane but what are the chances he could somewhat succeed there?? I mean it’s no secret that he can recruit. I would hate to be recruiting Memphis against him. I mean it’s doubtful but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Butch needs to go back to the MAC or another G5 conference if he wants to have success as a HC. He needs to go to a level of competition where he can have successful teams purely as a function of out-recruiting his competition, because he can't develop worth a s**t.

I don't think he has good relations with the coaches here. No issue. But I also don't think this will happen.

The really interesting thing about Butch is think about how close he was to making it here, or at the very least extending his tenure a couple of years.

If a few plays go differently, Tennessee finishes 10-2 or 11-1 in 2015. Wins the SEC East. If it wasn't for 2 inexplicable losses in 2016, we win the SEC East again. That's 20-4 (maybe better) over the 2015 and 2016 regular seasons, with the each season ending in a NY6 bowl. I guarantee you he receives a massive raise and extension after either the 2015 or 2016 season.

The 2017 season was going to be a step back no matter what given the talent we lost. It should have been better than 4-8, but perhaps a realistic projection is 6-6, 7-5 at best. Given what we know now about his coaching ability, I seriously doubt he recovers from that, and we probably have to end up taking on a higher buyout to fire him after the 2018 or 2019 season.

The team won the games and had the success they had in spite of Butch's poor coaching. Dobbs and DB, to name a couple, real talk willed us to a few big wins that overcame a poor gameplan and even worse adjustments.

I agree with that statement more about the 2016 team than the 2015 team. The 2016 season was a story of Tennessee winning games it shouldn't have; the 2015 season was a story of Tennessee losing games it shouldn't have.

Butch was so close to winning 10 or 11 regular season games in 2015, even with poor coaching. 10-2 would have been the best season since 2003 and 11-1 would have been the best since 2001, when we blew a shot at playing in the national title game - it's astonishing to think how Butch came so close to that given how poor a coach he is. Generally poor coaches don't even sniff seasons that are "almost" good. That 2015 squad absolutely could have been a top 10 team.
