Article: About CPS and Her New Salary

While many do not agree with her salary, I am with you on this one. When people all across the country think of women's basketball they think Lady Vols and Pat Summitt. All the attention she brings to the school, and oh by the way, her being the All time winningest basketball coach EVER, is sufficient reason enough in my opinion for her salary. Congrats Coach!

All the PC and feel-good emotions are going to melt away if this sets a precedent that hinders our ability to keep Bruce Pearl in the future. Economically, women's basketball is a sideshow to men's hoops. Sometimes I think people associated with UT forget what a fringe sport women's basketball is.

But if Pat wants to be paid like a men's coach, it's high time she be held accountable for results on the court.

When exactly is the last time she failed to produce results?

This past season. She's paid the top salary in her sport and she has the top talent in a sport that is very thin talent-wise, yet lesser-paid coaches have surpassed her the past eight years with less talent.

If we are going to pay so much for a wbb coach, let's at least hire the best and hire Geno.

No one is going to pay a manager 1 million dollars a year for a company that profits around 26k annually.

What benefit is there in being the top at your sport when the majority of people do not follow it and why pay the head coach a salary of 1 million a year when it produces small revenues?

Ladies basketball won't make the news unless there is a scandal, this sport has never got the attention that mens bb or football team has.

So what you're saying is having one point guard split during mid season (daddy's doing) and having your other point guard injured ( making an early return) accounts for nothing. In contrast, I think PS did one of her better jobs of coaching this year.Apparently you must not follow the Lady Vols enough.

You have got to be kidding. CPS has class. Geno is a complete smuck-and her record far surpasses his. She is the top women's basketball coach. Where have you been for the past ten years? Because of her presence, the level of competition has increased tremendously in women's basketball. You may not have heard of John Wooden, but he feels that the women's game is fundamentally a superior game. Her salary is high but by comparison to sports salaries, it's low. She fills the gym and gets UT a lot of TV time.

That's definitely a valid question. Although I would say that Pat Summitt has an immeasurable impact beyond just women's basketball due to the almost exclusively positive media attention she garners for the school. It's tough to put a price tag on positive publicity and the impact it has on contributions, enrollment, advertising rates, etc... Still not sure this was something the school had to do, but I think they can justify it fairly easily.

Not everything said about Pat across the country is favorable. She has a rep of having an ego and this salary deal has fed that! Not to mention her sexual preference has come into question more than once. I really don't have a side in the debate. Part of me says get what you can get! But I for one will never nominate her for sainthood!

I'd probably have an ego, too, if I set the national standard for my profession. In fact, I thing that ALL athletes and coaches who are worth a darn should have a little bit of swagger. Ego is good. Cockiness, self-absorption, and "above-the-law" mentalities are not.

The second half of your post is, forgive me, absurd.

I am not arguing either "for" or "against" her salary, but defending a great ambassador of my Alma Mater, women's sports, and numerous philanthropies.

which part? if you're talking about the sexual preference, its been said that other schools have used that aginst her in recruiting, true or not. I was not stating that as a fact only how some precieve her!

It blows my mind that anybody could make an argument that she does not deserve that money and then some. Make a list of the top 20 coaches by achievement in any sport that are currently out there. CPS accomplishments are almost assuredly at the top of the achievements of any of those coaches. Now break down those 20 coaches salaries, and chances have it she is towards the bottom.

Smokey21?????

Because of her presence, the level of competition has increased tremendously in women's basketball.

The level of competition is not that great. How many women's teams are competitive????? 10-14.

And by the way the level of competition has increased due to gender equality not Pat Summitt.

Her raise is irresponsible.
