tfpOnline:No One's Contacted Cutcliffe
It's good to finally see some news coming out of Knoxville...
tfpOnline:No One's Contacted Cutcliffe
Cutcliffe said Wednesday he has not been contacted for any open head coaching jobs, including ones at alma mater Alabama and UAB, which is in his hometown of Birmingham, Ala.
"I havent heard from anybody," Cutcliffe said, "so anything you read or anything you see is false from my perspective."
Cutcliffe has been on the road recruiting and preparing for a New Years Day meeting with Penn State in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.
"All Im doing is working. Thats all Im doing," Cutcliffe said. "I dont have anything to report. Nobody is contacting me."
Cutcliffe, who returned to his old post under Phillip Fulmer before this past season, is under a two-year contract at Tennessee that pays roughly $300,000 per year a deal that will likely be increased and/or extended. UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said he will have formal contract talks with Cutcliffe in late December or early January. "He knows he is thought of very highly here," Hamilton said. "He knows that as a fact."
Fulmer said he expects injured UT outside linebacker Jerod Mayo to return once bowl practices begin in Tampa on Dec. 26. Mayo hurt his knee during the Vols Nov. 18 victory at Vanderbilt. UTs staff first thought Mayo had fractured his kneecap and needed surgery, but the eventual diagnosis has proved much more promising for the Volunteers third-leading tackler.
"Some things showed up on the MRI," Fulmer said, "but the doctors did a great job of not jumping the gun and doing something too quick because they couldnt quite necessarily, completely identify on the MRI and on the CAT scan.
"So thank goodness."
Starting tailback LaMarcus Coker said he finally feels 100 percent after spraining his knee Oct. 21 against Alabama. He played that way during Wednesdays physical practice in full pads.
"He looked better," Cutcliffe said of Coker. "I thought he was quicker and more physical. It was good to see."
"I dont think Ive reached my full potential yet," Coker said. "A lot of people have been saying things like, Dont fall into that sophomore slump next year. But I kind of look at it as Ive been down the last two years with injuries and things like that, so I should be getting ready to come out of my slump rather than go into one."
UT has approximately 400 tickets remaining for the Outback Bowl, according to the schools ticket office. Purchases can be made through the UT ticket office at 1-800-332-8657 or online at utsports.com. Tickets are $60, and bowl officials in Tampa announced last week they had sold out of their portion.
