Homer rag deflecting blame from head coach. Sure, women's basketball has risen, but there is still room for one dominant power in the game: Connecticut.

Holly was lucky that she had some players that could score individually without running any sort of set plays or offense in her first three seasons. She was rewarded that she had a player like Massengale who could get hot from the three in certain games and carry the team.
Against the better teams Holly teams have never scored a lot of points and even when they did her defense which she was so proud of could not hold them below seventy points.
This year the offense caught up with Holly she doesn't have an effective three point shooter that she will play and the post players on this team cannot get open and score like Harrison could.
Her demise has been relying on players that are all the same 30 percent shooters who have weak passing abilities. When you have a player like Diamond and a three point shooter like Dunbar you find a way for them to play and you find a way to run set plays for them so they can make plays. This crappy offense does not do anything but pass the ball around the perimeter and try to force passes to well defended post players.

So when does Holly get fired? End of season or sooner? We need to get someone in before too long to save the next recruiting class.

It was pleasure to read read a fair and objective article. CHW may not be the person for the job, the author made the point that parity has made college sports more competitive. Rules changes have brought more parity to the pro sports also.

No excuse for a team with as many All Americans as we have to lose to LSU and Alabama.

Great post! Your observations are astute. It is telling that Holly is in over her head. She absolutely relied on Pat's recruits Ariel, Cierra and Izzy in her first 3 seasons without actually having to run an offense. Now that they are gone she has to earn her paycheck and she has failed tremendously. She seriously does not know what the fuq she's doing.

Yesterday, Holly was spotted at Anastacia Hayes game a Tennessee recruit.

Holly wanted to get out of Knoxville with the quickness because she can't take the heat. She got no recruits for 2016 and the ones that were recruited heavily for 2017 like Kashikatua and Dodson of Georgia we haven't heard from. It's gloom and doom for Holly.

We'll need to get rid of Holly before the program is on it's last breath. In other word, I agree with you.

Fire Holly, NOW!:)

Except it's a load of crap. Parity has nothing to do with this program's demise, and anyone who thinks a high level of success can't be sustained hasn't been paying attention the last 30 years....

Using terms like "decline" and "downturn" to describe the state of the program is pretty gentle when you consider it is in a state of almost complete collapse. Again, UT Martin beat Alabama by 18 points earlier this season, and without a single HS All American on its roster!

Regarding the emergence of parity and rule changes as factors impacting the Lady Vols and other programs, I am yet to see Geno scratching his head and mumble-stuttering about how he wishes he knew what his team's problems were so he could go about fixing them. Elite coaches stay ahead of the curve; lesser coaches get slammed, stunned and confused by it.

You are right on the button. She can not adapt to the times and parity has nothing to do with it. Personally I believe this entire staff is lazy. They don't recruit nor work hard enough to better the team. The results speak for themselves but having no recruits at this juncture is absolutely unforgivable. Ask your self why is that happening? Laziness and stupidity lies at the top of the totem pole.

Perhaps one of the reasons why Pat's last four years didn't produce a Final Four is because some of the present staff were recruiting her talent? They have been off the mark evaluation-wise with this current team, too. Who recruited the majority of the players over the past several seasons?

You're disagreeing With the author not me. Point is it's not easy to dominate as it use to be and the recruiting is more competitive than it used to be. No doubt our recruiting has fallen off and CHW has to be feeling the winds of change.

If its granted that the women's game is more competitive than its ever been, it must also be granted that the LVs have been left behind and can't fairly be called average in today's situation. If we can't expect the coaching staff to accept responsibility for that, then who the hell does?

As another poster said, the team just needs to go figure it out by themselves; REALLY? Then what the _ell are we paying a coach for? It's embarrassing to see this team play. Please get us a coach because this one will never make it and the program is drowning glug, glug, glug.... Anyone spend the night at a Holiday Inn Express? Quick, you're hired! You can't do any worse.

I don't know how much of this is the staff but the program, good or bad, falls squarely on the coach. Producing results is what coaches are judged by and that's how they are hired and fired. In this era of political correctness you need to cast aside the notion you can't fire a female coach and evaluate and judge them the same as the men; we ARE all for equal opportunity aren't we? Well, look at the FACTS, then make the right move. For one, I'm tired of hearing all of these lame excuses.

You have to actually have a recruit to save it. We need someone who can go out and get some recruits.

It would be nice to get someone in here who can go out and recruit, but what we really need is someone to get in there quickly and save the team we have now from defecting at the end of the year. We have enough good players on the team right now to beat most teams in the country, but if we lose half of them--well, I think you know...

The author lost me when he listed Stanford as one of the teams that has recently ascended to prominence. Stanford has been a powerhouse since the late 1980's, wining an NC in 1991. Plus, the authors statement that
With that being said, that doesn’t excuse the losses the Lady Vols have had to inferior opponents.
basically renders these other excuses moot.Yes, the LVs had slipped a bit when Holly took over, not quite making to the final four for four straight seasons but they were still a clear top 10 program. And Holly maintained that standard through her first 3 years.

This year the wheels have come off and the decline has been so precipitous that there is no reasonable to deflect blame from the coach.
