Redshirt was time well spent for Quinton Chievous » govolsxtra.com Mobile

Apparently the redshirt wasn't planned as some have thought.

Followed up his 30 point outing, with 23, definitely a good start for him.

I'm seeing a very good chance he sees minutes at the 3, with Edwards probably, and jordy and either Richardson or Mcbee at the 2.

"The three position is pretty wide open," he said. "Coach says he can see me playing anywhere from the two to the three and even the four. I can bring energy, knock down the open shot and help the team win."

Looks like we may see more of the 4 guard line-up.

I doubt it...maybe in foul trouble or in certain matchups, but I doubt it'll be as common as last year.

I took that as more of, he's capable of playing the four if need be, but the 3 will be his primary position and maybe a little 2.

I'm very interested to see how he does in Italy, right now he has me very excited for what he's capable of. His shot looks great, his defense is solid, and he's very physical and a great rebounder, he looks like he can be a solid contributor.

Bleeding...you are one of my favorite sources of info for UT basketball. Even at the times where we have disagreed, the result has been good, logical discussion. That's such a rare find on a board that seems to be dominated by jackholes. Thanks for the input.

No problem, and I've tried to avoid being one of those people, I just like talking Tennessee basketball and glad I'm not the only one.

Love the comment about getting his first shot and his first steal. Nice to see he focusing on D as much as his offense.

Just found it interesting that is all. Chievous put it out there, so there must be something to it,at least in his mind

He should have plenty of chances. I don't expect Maymon or Golden to play extensive minutes over there coming of injury. And Stokes and Richardson have already traveled and played a full tourney this Spring so Martin may possibly limit them. I see Italy as a place for the unproven guys to show their stuff.

Q adds a pretty good three point shot to a team that desperately needs shooters. I am telling you, this kid will make some noise this season. I have been excited about this guy ever since I saw him play in last years RTL. The major reason he redshirted was his limited experience as his father wouldn't let him play high school basketball until he felt he was mature enough to handle it.

True. Kenny does tend to post up more though. Makanjuola too.

I think that is one of the positives of the motion offense. It can get 2 guys that play the same position the ball in different spots (to hopefully play to their strengths). Hopefully CCM will be able to get the whole offense in this season. I am excited to see a much more efficient offensive team this year.

I missed last years games, but after seeing him play I'm in the same boat you are. He has quickly become one of the players that I'm most impressed by, and I really think he's going to demand minutes. IMO either Richardson or Mcbee will see a big loss in minutes this coming year.

I've always been very high on Chievous and knew that he could play. He will have a good career here if he stays motivated to excel and stays healthy. He just didn't all of a sudden develop some skills. He was this good last year. Night and day difference between Josh and him. They were both on the same RTL team last year, so it was easy to see which one was definitely more polished.

Some background info that I remember reading on Q is that his father has always wanted shool and grades to be number 1 priority. He kept Q out of AAU so he could focus on school first. That is why Q was not known that much in the recruiting world. He didn't do this to improve Q's grades because from what I understand he was an excellent student in HS, but just wanted to ensure that he excelled in school instead of on the court. This is what makes me think why Q was redshirted. Not that he couldn't play, because I'm clearly convinced that he would have seen minutes last year, but because his father may have had some influence on the decision to continue to make school first and basketball second. Q is definitely a 4 year player so redshirting him clearly is a benefit for CCM, so I doubt that it took much convincing to go this route. There were 2 exhibition games last year before the season started. Q got 0 minutes in both of them. Every player on the team including the walkons played in at least one of the games except Q. This is what makes me think that it was decided ahead of time that Q would redshirt. He may not have been part of the decision making process, but I think it was decided for him.

That very well could be, if I remember right
Martin ad his father had a pretty good relationship. Either way, I'm excited to see him in Italy where there's some defense, and then in the pre season exhibition games. As of now I'm seeing a big contribution, 20 minutes a game or so, possibly even more with a starting role.

I was already pretty excited about the upcoming season. If you keep telling me we have a lock solid replacement for Tatum at the SF I may not be able to control myself.:rock::rock:

I was just as excited to see him this time last year, so I know how you feel. Just got to put it in perspective though. It will still be his first year of action against the best competition he has ever faced. He didn't play as much AAU ball as most kids do these days. We still do not know how good his defensive skills are and won't find that out in the RTL. Basketball IQ can still be questionable.

But what he is is a smart kid. Tough. Good ball handling skills. Got a good shot. He should be a solid 4 year player for CCM. I do expect him to be a starter eventually. Might not happen this year, but it will before his career is up. Like BTO said, I too think he will get somewhere to 15+ minutes to start the year and we will see how far he progresses. He's not one that I think will be recruited over.

Whoa whoa whoa, let's not get carried away here. Chievous is undoubtedly an interesting prospect, but don't pretend that he's an impact player. He has pretty limited skills, but his athleticism and bball IQ help him overcome that deficiency. You're reading too much into it, it's not as complicated as you think. I agree that Quinton looked more impressive than Josh in last year's RTL, but the fact is that Quinton has only played organized ball for a few years, and Richardson, being able to run the point when needed, proved to be more valuable for last year's UT team than Chievous would have been. We were very deep in all the positions Quinton could have helped out on, it made perfect sense to redshirt him.

I'm excited about Chievous too, but let's be realistic. If he can defend and get the ball to Stokes or Maymon, that's pretty much the extent of his role as a contributor.

I think we posted about the same time. I don't expect him to be an impact player this year at all as somewhat mentioned above. But do think in my limited viewing of him, that he will be a solid 4 year player.

At the start of the year, I don't think anyone thought that Josh would be playing backup pg. It was expected for Washpun to be able to handle 6-8 minutes a game.

What doesn't make since is why Q didn't get 1 minute in any of the 2 exhibition games last year. He was the only one on the team including walk ons that did not play.

I'm not 100% certain, but I do believe that Q had more playing experience than Yemi before the season started last year and we were just as log jammed in the post positions as the 2/3 guard position at the beginning of the year. I could have easily seen Yemi redshirt before Q.
