As a life long fan of the U of A, I just felt compelled to come by and visit y'all.

I currently live in Chicago (even lived in the great state of Tennessee for two years), but believe me...I bleed as Crimson as ever. Every Saturday I sit in front of my "Gameplan" subscription and watch the Tide...have been doing this even through the hard times. A Bama flag flies on the front of my house even though these midwesterners just don't get it. My license plate reads "BAMA 37". I love BAMA football!!

But you know what else I love?!?

I LOVE the rivalry between our two teams. I know things have been a little crazy over the last few years...and believe me, as a BAMA fan I'm not thrilled with Coach Phil. But that only makes the game more pivital, more personal, and...well, more fun!!

I will spend Saturday after next "hating" your team as much as I do AU, Florida, and everyone else I'm supposed to "hate" as a fan. But it's not gameday yet...so I'm not ready to fell that way.

As I get a little older, and have had a kid of my own, one thing I realize more and more is that these players are just kids, themselves. When they take those helmets off, they're just getting younger and younger (because I'm certainly not that old...am I?)

Then when I came across your forum today, another thing hit me...we're all just alike on these boards. We not only stand behind our teams like no other fans in the nation...we have to defend our "virtual turf" against flamers and jerks that feel it makes them bigger to come over and degrade something we obviously love. I'm not here for that.

I just dropped by...most likely to make this single post to say "thanks" to the tried and true fans that visit this board. If not for y'all, there'd be no rivalry...no tradition...no game...and no reason to "hate" on the Third Saturday in October. And to me, that's what it's all about.

Coach Bryant taught his boys (and indirectly his fans) about class. You can always tell who listened and who didn't. My Grandfather listned...my Dad listened...I listened...and I hope my boy listens too.

So, this post is pretty much a "Thank you". Seems kind of odd, I know. But I live for the upcoming weekend we'll spend kicking each other around. I can't wait to mow over Ole Miss this weekend just to get to y'all!! One thing I really miss about living down South...the atmosphere around games like ours.

So all the best to y'all Vols Fans!! Well, except for two weeks from now!! :wink2:

ROLL TIDE and God Bless!!

Thanks for the post. I too remember when this was a rivalry with respect on both sides. I remember sitting at Legion Field and watching a UT cheerleader politely approach Coach Bryant during warmups (he was leaning against the goalpost in front of the UT section) and ask for his autograph -- and him politely obliging.
But go on the Bama forum and it is sheer hatred for us so thick you can cut it with a knife.

Amen Esquire! You can talk about other rivalries, and both teams have some good ones, but this one has always felt a little different to me. I was raised in a Vol household and knew that Bama was a team we truly needed to beat to complete the season. I still remember by Aunt's phone calls all those years in a row (she was a Bama grad) and how it pained my mom to answer the phone. Then how happy I was when I went to UT and got the honor in '95 of making the call!

I just hope this returns to the days of class and respect, wnd a true rivalry. Tide and Vol fans used to love the build-up to the 3rd Saturday, but respected the others tradition and fans. I can understand some of the hard feelings against Fulmer (right or wrong) but the lack of respect from Bama fans is what bothers me. These are some great kids out there putting it all out on the line for our enjoyment. Win or lose they at least deserve our admiration.

Good luck and go warm up on the Rebs!

Bama Lawman, welcome to the site. Funny you should present such and enlightening post. Many of the Vol fans, including myself have been quite dissapointed with the Vol season so far, and many are wondering if there is anything left to motivate the Vols. Well as long as there is a third Saturday in October, there will always be something to play for.

You will find reasonable discussion on this board. GO VOLS!!

Welcome to the board esquirebama. This is the best rivalry in the nation as far as i am concerned. If I missed every other Vol football game, I would be happy just seeing the Vols and Tide go at each other. I live in Fayetteville, TN. but work in Huntsville, AL. I get alot of crap from some local Tide fans, but a few are almost as classy as you.

Until gameday.....................GO VOLS

It must be awful living up north and trying to follow the Tide. They just don't get it up there, they don't understand what college football means to us down here. As for this rivalry, I agree with a previous poster who said there was just something different about this rivalry. We Bama fans have Auburn and LSU and you Vol fans have UF and UGA, but this one is just different. It's pretty obvious to me why. UA and UT are the most prestigious and winningest programs in the history of the SEC. These two schools have tradition and history unlike any other SEC schools. It's the famous coaches and great players, some of the most amazing games I've ever seen, wins and losses. Even with the insane trend of streaks in this series, the rivalry is always hot and always means something. To have a name like The 3rd Saturday in October for this rivalry, how could it not be great? It is sad that lately Bama has been down and there has been all of the off the field nonsense, but once again Bama is in the top 10 where they belong and UT brings a top 20 team to Tuscaloosa, this game has conference and national implications, and that's what the rivalry is all about and that's really all that matters.

Guys...I just came back on my way out of work for the evening and was quite touched by your responses.

As I mentioned...I lived in Nashville, TN for a few years. My folks actually vacationed in Gatlinburg several years when I was a kid. I've always loved the state of TN...beautiful place...great folks! My own family and I will be vacationing down there next year.

I simply posted because I just wanted y'all to know that TRUE BAMA fans know how important we all are to each other. Believe me...there's just as many "Bammers" out there (and I use that term to describe the low lifes that like to flame other folk's board) that don't mind claiming UT as part of the "Great SEC" when that debate arises. I'm sure it goes both ways.

I live amongst a bunch of BIG 10 folks up here and they love to challenge me head-to-head on the quality of Big 10 v. SEC football. I love nothing more that to point them to the AP Top 25 and show 'em BAMA, UT, Florida, LSU, Georgia and even Au...Aub...er...I can't say that one. :stop:

I love it when things go well for all of us...it up's our game and brings fear to those outside of the conference. Heck...I even enjoyed those brainiacs over at Vandy having an early go of it. HA!

So...thanks so much for the warm welcome. I know it'll have to cool a bit come week after next, but again...until then all the best to y'all. Count on a visit or two from me before AND after the game...regardless of the outcome. And remember this...you'll ALWAYS have a fan here WHENEVER you play Auburn!!

Take care,
EB

Great post Bama fan. Few actually get that the "bammer" reference is a joke moking their lack of class. Hope you stick around, we like permanent rivals to post, look at NCgator and fade. Stop by anytime.

I always appreciate those fans who realize that college football is as exciting as anything that happens in our lives. Fall of the year is just special and without the rivalries, the fans, the hype, even the media, this time of year just wouldn't be the same.

Good to have you aboard...and I appreciate your perspective as a huge fan of your institution, our conference, the game itself, and the rivalry!

Welcome aboard brother, few people really understand what a true rivalry is or what it means. The UT/Bama rivalry is one of the greatest of all times.

Good to hear from you Esquire. Chicago, huh. Big 10 country. Tell 'em up there about the two polls.... there's the Top 10 and then there's the Big 10.

I promised I'd come back and visit win or lose.

Fortunately for me, it's after a win...but what a game!!

As usual, the UT-BAMA showdown was a defensive gem!!

Thanks to your boys as always for making me be unable to eat, sit or loosen up my rear end for three hours!!

Seriously, one h*ll of an effort!! Thanks for your hospitality last week...

...you are now free to win out!!

Take care all!
