City to give reparations to Black residents as ‘removing statues isn’t enough’

So these handouts, i mean reparations will now make blacks even, so now we can start removing race based advantages since they're getting paid back. Oh the comedy of ignorance

I keep see the virtues signaling word “restitution “ but I mean all they are doing is investing into the community ..

I don't know how the government can dole out public funds based on race. Sounds unconstitutional. About the only way you could do this constitutionally that I can think of would be as part of a settlement agreement. Also, Sierra Nevada just lost a long time customer. I won't support businesses in towns that do this kind of crap, even if it is just for show.

'The timing is right for reparations': Cities propose reparations amid nationwide unrest

Idealism v. Pragmatism is a key issue here IMO. As such, the concept of reparations is a slippery slope.

Putting the difficulty of actually doing this for descendants of slaves aside, we'd then need to move on to American Indians.

So, our ancestors basically killed a good portion of the indigenous Indians, moved them to reservations and took their land, by and large. So, I guess we should just... what... give the United States back to them and say we're square? I mean, is there really a monetary sum that would make things right?

I'm a white guy, so I'm biased... but..

I prefer to subscribe to the concept of poker hands: We're dealt what we're dealt. Can't change that. Some people are born into wealth, most aren't. But, we truly live in a land of opportunity... if you work hard, do well in school and apply yourself, you can get a free education (or at least substantial scholarships) to many colleges. We had (have?) affirmative action for decades which is, of course, reverse racism against white people - further enabling folks who aren't born with a silver spoon in mouth to have opportunities. Then, after school, many corporations actively recruit applicants of color. Again, another source of opportunity.

At some point, even for a white guy like me, we can't blame society for what we had or didn't have as a child. We're given what we're given, and then it's our job to fight for what we want the rest of our lives. This is, IMO, the American way.

The old expression "Once you turn 30, you can't blame your parents for anything" applies to everyone - regardless of skin color.

Our country remains one of the best places anywhere to improve your lot in life - regardless of where you come from or your race.

I don't think reparations is a step forward for the US. And it obviously would go from black folk to Indian folk to - I don't know - maybe I could trace my roots back to a Danish sailor that landed in Massachusetts and got shot by another "American" white dude on Plymouth Rock. OK, America, you owe me $50,000 for this wrongful death. Plus interest. That comes out to $5 billion bucks.

Let's not go down the path of idealism. Yes, slavery was wrong. Yes, taking native Indian land was wrong. But, from a pragmatic standpoint, how would this be done, what is enough and where does it ever end?

It's a Chinese fingertrap waiting to be sprung.

"Let's not go down this path..."

Why not, it seems to be the path that the country is headed for. Let's head down the path our young people want us to head down, let's give our youth what they're asking for and see if they like it? We have raised a couple of generations of spoiled brats, let's let them get what they want.

Interesting considering the author.

My main issue is we dont assign generational guilt in this country. My ancestors may or may not have had slaves. Even if they did it doesnt mean I am guilty of anything.

The other thing we dont do in this country is blood money or assign dollar values to life. Are we really going to say "Ok African Americans, you have been paid, now you cant say anything about slavery again."

I would pay to see the hub bub if we actually tracked slave ancestry and based payments on that. Watch the fighting between the more recent immigrants, and those who happen to only have ancestors that were slaves.

Every time I think the sheer stupidity of the human race cannot be any greater, something comes along and ups the ante. When did the US become a nation full of misinformed, entitled Karen’s? Reparations? For what?
