Athens from Chattanooga?

There’s gotta be a better route that avoids atlanta…. What’s the best route to y’all?

I'd reccomend the following:

US74 east to US19 south, and south through Blairsville then hop over to Cleveland and hit US129 south into Athens

or

I75 to Calhoun, then east through Dawsonville and Gainesville to US129 south into Athens

If you are traveling tomorrow, the I-75 to I-285 to I-85 thing is always moving well early on Saturday morning.

Once you exit I-85, then it can slow down.

Atlanta is built to semi-handle that weekday mass commute crowd. But, on Saturday mornings, they are lazy and sleep in.

Sorry but that is the best way to go. If you just have to by-pass Atlanta, you could take I-75 south to Cartersville and get on Hwy 20. Take that all the way across until you get to Hwy 316 (I think it is) and turn east to Athens. It will add at least an hour to your time though. Hwy 20 is mostly two lane and can get crowded. Good luck and enjoy the atmosphere in Athens.

There is no faster route that avoids Atlanta. All the east-west roads up there are terrible. Just time the trip so you don't hit the perimeter between 3 and 7.

Driving east-west through the hills up north will be a lot more scenic than coming all the way down to the city, if you've got time for it, but it won't be faster. Good luck!

I agree with @tbh I usually go to Athens down thru Dalton--Ellijay--Dawsonville--Gainesville--Athens. My brother in law lives there so we go that way to visit him; it's a bit longer but it's a much less stressful and much prettier drive.

Have either self-heating MRE breakfast on hand. Have your car's wheels turning by 3AM. Arrive in Atlanta well ahead of traffic nightmare. Park at wherever you plan to park. Recline your car's seat and nap until, maybe 8AM or 9AM. Have your breakfast. Exit the car and have a nice pregame day, including lunch somewhere nearby, or a self-heating MRE lunch again in your car. Enjoy the game. I used to call this guerrilla game day traveling to away games. Less traffic, and got prime parking spots.

Just go South till you smell it, then go East until you step in it.

Easy to find. The numb-nuts built their stadium in the very lowest place within a 100 mile span.

All the poop drains directly into that place....most of it wearing red.

US 19 is a great drive

I passed a big caravan of charter busses (one was orange and white checkered) that appeared to be headed for the Chattanooga split when I was coming back into Knoxville around 2:30 today. I assumed they were headed to Athens.

- The disadvantage of the westernmost route is Atlanta.
- The disadvantage of the easternmost route is it takes the longest.
- The disadvantage of the middle route is you have to go through Gainesville...(Georgia, but still).

Pick your poison!

And Go Vols!

Trucker here living in crackworth, I mean Acworth ga. Atlanta is hell, all the time except 3/4 am. Hwy 316 off of I 85 will be bumper to bumper.
If it were me, I would take 64 outta Cleveland to Ducktown, Blairsville and south from there.
