Viz's slider is the best secondary pitch on the staff outside K and V, IMO.

Hudson and O'Flaherty have some pretty solid breaking stuff in their respective arsenals, I am sure they have some great perspective to share with him.

Of course Venters has the nastiest stuff but it's not exactly easy to teach natural release motion. I dunno how many interviews I have seen O'Flaherty jokingly cursing Venters and his natural movement versus how much work he has to put in to hit spots with movement.

When Venter's locks in.. he is one pitcher who is truly unhittable.. one of those true bullpen pitchers, his numbers (when starting) in the minors were very pedestrian

If only Venters could pitch with both arms he could probably pitch just under 90 innings a year out of then pen... *sigh*

Javy Lopez coming out with a new book. Autobiography on his times with ATL. Should be good. Javy was an underrated player.

Tommy Hanson involved in auto accident this morning. Being evaluated for a head injury.

Its comforting to know that he didnt sit in a tree stand and eat beef jerky all offseason....

Reporters that are around the team are saying it's just a bad picture and that he doesn't look any different than he has for the past few years.

I sat down on the field for a game last year and it was the first time I had been near Chipper since he was an 18 year old playing A ball. TV does not do him justice. That is one big dude.

Agreed. He is a big dude.

I also read where they where saying it was a bad photo. Its pretty funny though.

“Thing is, I’m seven pounds lighter than I’ve ever been in camp, and now I’m fat,” Jones said. “I weight 226, 227. Usually I’m 235.”

That didn’t stop Brian McCann and other Braves from razzing him after Jones returned Thursday from two days of fishing. He hadn’t heard about the photo until he got back.

“Mac’s so happy now,” Jones said, “because [at Turner Field] every time that little kid from ‘Sandlot’ comes on [the video board] before we start the game – ‘play ball!’ – I say ‘Hey, Mac!’”

I have to say, I'm having a little trouble working up the requisite spring training optimism this year.

If Heyward can start hitting again, and Prado can start hitting again, and Freeman can avoid the sophomore slump, and the kid can actually handle SS, and the young pitching all works out, and Chipper can both stay healthy and hit the ball, then yeah, this is a team that has a chance to compete for a title.

I really wish I had some way to tease out whether I should be shiatting on Wren or the ownership. This is a team which was a couple of moves away from being a serious contender. And they didn't make any of them.

Everything has to go right for this team to contend. And everything never goes right.
