Isn't he switching to 3B this year?

Sure is, with Freeman on first for hopefully the next
10 years, organization sees him as a legitimate replacement for Chip. He has got the bat for sure, lots to work on at third though.. May end up in left if this fails. One thing for sure, he rakes. Wears the gaps out.

•Jason Heyward’s batting average dropped by 50 points last year, and his slugging percentage dropped by 67 points in part because he had so much trouble getting to the ball on the inside part of the plate. He has made adjustments, according to Jones and catcher Brian McCann, each saying that Heyward’s path to the ball is different and better.

“I wondered last year why the ball didn’t jump off his bat like it did the year before, so I went back and looked at tapes of him in April 2010 when he was just killing it,” said Jones. “We showed it to him. He has made the adjustment. The ball is jumping now like 2010.”

from ESPN....Anyone wanna bet that Chipper is our hitting coach sometime in the next few years?

also from ESPN...

•Ace Tim Hudson said he “feels great’’ after back surgery in the offseason. The timetable for his return is May 1. Tommy Hanson threw Monday, and was very encouraged about the way he threw. Until Hudson returns, the Braves will go with Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Brandon Beachy, Mike Minor and either Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado or Kris Medlen for the No. 5 slot.
•On the first day of batting practice of spring training, Braves outfielder Matt Diaz faced closer Craig Kimbrel and Julio Teheran. “Whoa... I think I fouled off one pitch,” Diaz said with a smile. “Kimbrel’s first pitch came in about thigh-high and I thought, ‘Thanks, Craig for grooving one.’ By the time the pitch got to the plate, the ball was up around my neck. The ball does rise, no one matter what anyone tells you. Sister Rose was a great (high school) physics teacher and a really sweet lady, but she never faced Craig Kimbrel.”

Yep. They didn't need a thing in the winter though.....

Prado, a young reliever, and a minor league position player for B.J. Upton and Sean Rodriguez.

It made so much sense for both teams, especially Atlanta.

So sad...we didn't even spend to get a legit up the middle bat.

Interesting to note:

In the Spring game against the Mets (split scrimmages today), Chipper is batting 5th behind Mac and Uggla.

TIFWIW

why the hell would the Rays do that?

Because they are going to lose Upton and big up Prado who can play second and fill a hole. Zobrist goes to the outfield, plus you get a young bat which they can use since they have plenty of pitchers.

The point though was the Braves should have done something and they didn't.

Haha, I know that was the point. And they probably should have... though idk which move.

But I don't think that was a possible move.

We have Bourn, McCann, and UGGLA. How many more "up the middle bats" do you want? Off the top of my head, I can't name a team with better "up the middle" bats. If we have a need, it's for Tulo. If you could swing that trade and fit it in the budget, I'll personally carry you on a throne to Atlanta. A legitimate left fielder would be nice but prado is worth more to the braves than what other teams are willing to give for him. Freeman is playing. UGGLA is playing. Chipper, for better or worse, is playing. McCann is playing. Bourn is playing. Heyward is playing. Prado isn't moveable. No one will be acquired to block Simmons. There aren't reasonable additions that could have been made. We can't bat 10 people.

Edit: Yes my phonne autocorrects UGGLA to all caps because his name..is Dan UGGLA

The Yankees
The Rangers
The Red Sox (sorta)
The Phillies
The Nationals (ok, probably not the nationals)

I was talking about a backup up the middle bat. We don't have one.

In fairness, Pastornicky is probably about back up middle IF bat

Pastornicky will serve 5.5 of his 6 years of team control as our backup utility INF if he's lucky. Heck, Simmons might win the job from him this spring.

Even without hamilton in center. With him, even more so. As well as the others.

I would say definite no to the nationals and red sox. I would argue no to the phillies and rangers without Hamilton in CF. Yankees, yes.

No C comes close to McCann, Napoli 1/2 season fluke not withstanding if you even want to consider him their catcher. UGGLA outhomers everyone. Bourn steals more bases than anyone.
