I was listening to 104.5 The Zone in Nashville today, and Plaster and crew are in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome covering the SECT. Plaster stated that plans are moving forward for the Falcons to get a new stadium in the next 3-5 years.

Is the Georgia Dome that old? Didn't it open in like 1994 or something? And what the heck would they do with it if the Falcons get a new stadium?

Seems that it was at the tail end of a god awful era for stadium design.

The new stadium would be on the other end of the Ga Dome property. I haven't actually heard what the plans would be for the Dome. Theoretically I guess they could leave it as is and continue to use it for everything except the 10 games a year that the Falcons play in there. That building gets a ton of use and probably would still be economically viable.

The same must be true of Phillips Arena.

The Ga Dome has always had a very bland feel to it. It was even worse before Arthur Blank made some changes to make it play like a home field. It was like going to a game inside a Doctor's office.

Never understood why the Falcons needed or wanted an indoor stadium. I blame Glanville!

Philips is a really nice arena. The "Atlanta" motif on the outside is a little odd, but it's well designed and comfortable inside. Whoever decided to stack the luxury boxes on one side was a genius, because it pulls every seat in the upper deck closer to the floor/ice by 40 feet. There isn't a bad seat in there.

I don't know what to think about the new-stadium talk. As a taxpayer, I'm opposed to paying a cent for a new stadium. As a Falcons fan, I would kill to have an open-air stadium -- I would probably buy season tickets for myself and my son in a second if they built one, but the weather in Atlanta is just too nice in the fall for me to go sit in a room and watch football every weekend. As an SEC fan, I'm not happy at the risk of losing the SEC championship game, which apparently would be a possibility if they tore down the Dome, and I don't know how it would be viable to keep two football stadiums open and maintained right next to each other.

They will probably do whatever they think maximizes their chances of luring the Super Bowl back.

If it means TN will never have to play another college football game there, then I'm all for it, TN always played lousy in the GA dome, I hate that place for that reason alone.

I still haven't heard anybody official say anything about tearing down the Ga Dome.
