Where do you fall in the war on big tobacco?

Australian court OKs logo ban on cigarette packs - Yahoo! News

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia has urged other countries to adopt the world's toughest law on cigarette promotion, which was upheld Wednesday by the country's highest court and prohibits tobacco companies from displaying their logos on cigarette packs.

The High Court rejected a challenge by tobacco companies who argued the value of their trademarks will be destroyed if they are no longer able to display their distinctive colors, brand designs and logos on cigarette packs.

Starting in December, packs will instead come in a uniformly drab shade of olive and feature graphic health warnings and images of cancer-riddled mouths, blinded eyeballs and sickly children. The government hopes the new packs will make smoking as unglamorous as possible.

"Many other countries around the world ... will take heart from the success of this decision today," Attorney General Nicola Roxon told reporters after the court ruling.

"Governments can take on big tobacco and win and it's worth countries looking again at what the next appropriate step is for them," she added.

British American Tobacco, Philip Morris International, Imperial Tobacco and Japan Tobacco International are worried that the law will set a global precedent that could slash billions of dollars from the values of their brands. They challenged the new rules on the grounds that they violate intellectual property rights and devalue their trademarks.

Big tobacco should do there what they should have done in MS and FL when they sued. Pull all product from the state, and simply let the lawmakers explain where all of the tax money went and how they are going to fill the void.

If people are dumb enough to put that crap in their body, then I feel like let them have at it. Just don't let them smoke around me.

It's like garbage pail kids for adults. :)

I'd try and collect them all but I don't smoke.

I miss tobacco sponsorship in sports. But that stuff is effective, when I occasionally smoke I would look for the brands which supported my favorite team.

Are you for or against smoking bans on restaurants, bars, etc.?

I'm a pack-a-day-plus smoker and I'm still completely for banning smoking in restaurants and bars.

Should be the owner/operators decision.

For my own selfish reasons, I am for banning them in restaurants, bars, etc. I can see the side of the argument that thinks the restaurant owner should have the choice.

However, I am adamantly for banning them in and at the entrance of public buildings, and workplaces. But then, the restaurants are somebody's workplace, too.

Then you come back and say, well you have the option to work somewhere else.

Then I call you an idiot for thinking that should even be a consideration, and we argue back and forth without anyone ever making any additional valid points.

So let's just skip all that and agree that I am right.

Yeah, you know what's best for others, so why don't you just force it on 'em you do-gooder.

Damn, dude. Ignoring any health concerns of second-hand smoke, it's just the same as any other restriction on annoying behavior.

You can't blast your music above certain levels in my neighborhood, so why should you be able to smoke in or near my library?

As far as I know the science supporting the danger of second-hand smoke is shakey at best.

That's beside the point. He was talking about privately owned restaurants. You don't like the smoke? Don't go there. What if a restaurant owner has 2 completely segmented sections where no smoke can reach the other? Illegal!
