So nephew has a 2nd Gen Tacoma that is having a vibration issue. He's not flush with money so hoping to get some kind of idea of what might be a simple fix vs a real problem. I know one end of a wrench from another but I'm no gearhead either. I have driven it and here's what seems to be happening.

First the vibration is only under throttle...even very light throttle. It also isn't consistent. There's nothing really noticeable at all up until around 38-42 when you can't miss it. It's not violent or with any real mechanical noise. It'll then smooth out for the most part and then hit another vibration node around 60 then eases off a bit but still there up to 65 which is as fast as I went that day.

I know (and told him) the problem could unfortunately be a dozen things. That's the hell of automotive issues. Having said that any ideas, especially if it's something simple enough for a very lightly greased monkey to at least check?

Sounds like a universal joint about to go. Or he has a tire or tires out of balance. How long has it been since he’s had tires rotated and balanced.

Also,Toyota’s that model are bad for front tie rods to go bad.

It’s definitely one of those three things.

Go to an auto parts store and pull a code. It could be an ignition coil/coil pack.

Do you know the year and mileage?
I think 2010 and 180K.
Lot to go through but thanks for the link.

I'll check on that. If it's been a minute that'd be worth doing anyway. I wouldn't have thought tire balance would be so throttle sensitive though. Will look into tie rods.

At least that's an easy one.

Thanks for the input guys.

Had the same issue with my Tacoma. Definitely sound like a U joint. Only under throttle at medium speed is a dead giveaway.

If it has a tach, is the vibration highest at similar RPM - you said it was high about 38-42 then again at 60? You might have a motor/transmission mount issue. Unfortunately with 180K miles a lot of things can wear out.

Sounds an awful lot like a u-joint. If it shakes more at 38-42, that is the speed where suspension shaking will be more or less at the same frequency with wheel imbalance (not driveshaft speed and not imbalance) but a u-joint may be enhancing what is already there. Luckily the u-joints are susceptible to inspection. You can look at 'em for free. And based on what was posted I would look at the back one first.

Any luck?
