400 Rounds, 17 Grenades, & 30 Enemies: Soldier Single-Handedly Beats Back Taliban Barrage | The Blaze

It took him 400 rounds, 17 grenades, and a machine gun tripod used as a weapon, but one British Gurkha soldier single-handedly beat back an attack by 30 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan last summer. And now he‘s getting one of his military’s highest honors:

Then there is the true story which is told with several variations but goes sort of like this:

As the use of paratroops was increasing during the Malaya confrontation in the 1950’s, a British colonel asked the leader of a platoon of Gurkha if they would be prepared to jump from a cargo plane behind enemy lines.

Somewhat to the colonel’s surprise, the Gurkha sergeant requested a day to talk it over with his men.

The next day, the Gurkha duly reported that they would do it, but only over marshy ground with the aircraft flying at no more than 100ft.

‘But at a hundred feet the parachutes wouldn’t open,’ the colonel explained.

The Gurkha replied, ‘Parachutes? you didn't mention parachutes!’

The following is about another Gurkha on a train in India, armed only with his kukri fighting knife, who earlier this year took on 40 armed thieves because they were about to rape an 18 year old girl and the Gurkha easily won, killing three, wounding several and routing the rest.

Much of the purloined loot was recovered from dead or seriously wounded robbers.

The parents of the girl offered him a $6,500 reward but he never went to pick it up.

Reportedly the guy who defeated the 30 Taliban was taunting them all through the battle saying;

"Where is you allh now?"

"Come get your 72 virgins."

As a Gurkha is disciplined for beheading a Taliban: Thank God they are on our side! | Mail Online

Just picture the scene as a soldier returns from hunting an arch-enemy. Commanding officer: 'Did you get him?' Soldier: 'Yes, sir.' Commanding officer: 'Are you sure?' Soldier: 'Yes, sir.' Soldier reaches into rucksack and places severed head on table.

Their conduct is, perhaps, best summed up by Rifleman Lachhiman Gurung, who found himself under repeated Japanese attack in Burma in 1945. With his comrades badly injured, he fought off 200 enemy troops single-handed - literally - having lost an arm and eye.

When a relief force found him the next morning, his position was littered with 31 Japanese corpses. The 169 survivors had run away. Rifleman Gurung - who now lives in Middlesex - became one of the 26 members of the Brigade of Gurkhas to win the Victoria Cross (there would, undoubtedly, have been more but the VC was not extended to Gurkhas until 1911).
