In my opinion, the away goals rule as a tie breaker in two leg soccer series is the stupidest rule in sports. In soccer, if a two teams tie 0-0 and 1-1 in their two legs, how does it make sense to declare the team who played on the road in the 1-1 game the winner? I know people hate penalties but at least they test a player's and goalkeeper's nerve and skill to at least some small extent. The away goals rule makes as much sense as the NFL overtime policy. Does anyone else agree with this? Just wanted to hear some thoughts.

It makes as much sense as NHL and Olympic games being decided by the hockey version of home run derby

As bad as it may be, at least the winner of a shootout would be winning at something. I can't see how it makes more sense to take 2 ties and declare one of those two teams the winner.

It's ghey and lame.

The rule does seem kind of silly. If a team goes on the road in the first leg and get a goal, even if it ends in a draw, they can just pack their guys in the box in the home leg and play for a 0-0 draw and win. I don't know what a good solution is though, shootouts suck as a way to determine a winner, but in most cases, finding time to play a third game would be out of the question.

Shootouts aren't the best way, but I don't hate it like everyone else does. At least they're entertaining. It isn't at all teamwork oriented, but it isn't the coin flip some people think it is.

Penalty shots are a part of hockey, so it's slightly dishonest to refer to a shootout as the equivalent of a home run derby.

Well it also works against teams who try to sit back in defense during the away leg. If they don't score (like Chelsea against Barca last year) and then allow a goal at home with an even aggregate, they get punished.

If you get punished for giving up a goal at home, shouldn't you be rewarded for playing good defense on the road?

pk's are not really a test of a keeper's skill. There is virtually no chance to stop a well placed shot even if you guess right. Side net should score every time

Shooters don't hit the side net every time. There definitely are keepers who are better at stopping penalties than others. It's not just a coin flip. Unlike the away goals tiebreaker, a shootout at least requires the team win something. I don't think that shootouts are the best way to break a tie, but they do test nerve and skill to at least some degree. Away goals doesn't really solve anything. It's no better than choosing the winner based on who had the fewest fouls.
