Penn State is the only one without any protected rivals. It also looks like the number each team gets varies per team and history.

  • Illinois: Northwestern, Purdue
  • Indiana: Purdue
  • Iowa: Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin
  • Maryland: Rutgers
  • Michigan: Michigan State, Ohio State
  • Michigan State: Michigan
  • Minnesota: Iowa, Wisconsin
  • Nebraska: Iowa
  • Northwestern: Illinois
  • Ohio State: Michigan
  • Oregon: Washington
  • Purdue: Illinois, Indiana
  • Rutgers: Maryland
  • UCLA: USC
  • USC: UCLA
  • Washington: Oregon
  • Wisconsin: Iowa, Minnesota

That all said, it looks like the schedule is set up so that the rotation makes sure Penn State plays either Ohio State or Michigan each year.

Edit: Fixed error from article.

USC got a bit of a break too seeing as how 2 of thier 5 away games are on the west coast against UCLA and Washington...The traveling for those guys is going to be brutal over the years.

true... but penn state never plays them both in the same season. I expect penn state will be in a bunch of conf championship games going forward

there are also some errors in that protected rivals list... wiscy seems like it has iowa and minnesota

Yeah, I see that now. I just copied it from the article that had been posted, but the author overlooked that.

No divisions. If they get to 20 you would think they would have to go to pods or something .

Why though, exactly? As currently is, the ACC is not doing divisions, the Big 12 doesn’t do divisions, and the SEC isn’t going to be doing divisions (or pods). It’s pretty much all just a shift backward to the previous formats (that ended in 2004, 1995/2016, 2010, and 1991) of top conference records (only now with a focus on the top 2 conference records).

Those conferences have fewer teams than 20. How exactly do you schedule for 20 teams and make it work? I think it would be great to have 4 five team divisions. Play your division foes, play teams from the other 3 divisions. Have the division winners play a semifinal format and then the championship in a Neutral site. You could have the PAC/B1G , Flyover B1G, Great Lakes B1G and the East B1G. There are some kinks to work out, but it wouldn’t be boring .

Huh? Penn St plays both Ohio St and Michigan this year and they have ever since they made divisions because they’re in the same division.

Edit: NM. I see it now. That’s what I get for trying to work, eat and read VN at the same time. You’re talking about moving forward. I motion to strike my prior comment.
