There are too many bowls today. This year there are 42 which includes the two playoff games plus the National Championship game for 43.
What happened to the good old days of 25 or even 10. Back in the 60's these were the bowl games:

1. Cotton
2. Orange
3. Rose
4. Sugar
5. Gator (now TaxSlayer)
6. Liberty (Memphis)
7. Sun
8. Peach
9. Bluebonnet

Believe the Outback, Fiesta, Citrus and Holiday Bowls were added in the 70's. In my opinion there doesn't need to be more than 20-25 Bowls. Top 40 or 50 teams play with a 6-8 team playoff for National Championship.
At most, for the major conferences, the top 5 or 6 teams get invited-tough-but have to win a minimum of 7 games.

Participation trophies for everyone!
I used to watch most every bowl game, now it's less than half.

Who really cares. They aren't playing for a title. Gives teams like a mtsu a reason to play out their season, more practice, and a chance to play on national tv. The small schools usually get enough money to pay for travel so it not an impact financially.

Nowadays ESPN has airtime to fill between 20 different channels. That is why there are some many bowl games. The more airtime it can sell to advertisers the more $$$ in ol' Mickey's red shorts.

I think there are too many but I also don't care at the same time. It's essentially giving us 3 extra weeks of college football and outside of the playoff games, they're just glorified exhibition games. Plus the newer ones are seemingly more for the Group of 5 conferences, since that's going to be their ceiling barring a miracle season.

I do think it's kind of funny that Orlando now has 3 bowl games.

If it makes money, it will be done.

It gives otherwise finished teams another month of practice. No team is going to turn that down.

It gives exposure to a lot of people off work to see your team.

It's more games to bet on. Vegas isn't complaining.

The trend is more, not less. The quality is certainly terrible, but that isn't the point. Money is.

Now you're talking my era. Good times and memories.
