Back many years ago when social media(sports ) Got started I joined when it was Gridscape. One of my railroad co-workers was his brother-in-law Grid. this was back when there were folks like Sandman, Tennstud, TribeVol, Bob Kendall and AtlantaVol who knew stuff 3-4 days before the news media got wind of it. It was fun and still is. We had get togethers from time to time and got to put the faces with the names. Some of the names I have mentioned are gone now but still enjoy the updates. Still get a kick out of the yearly drugstore QB's yearly posts knowing more than our coach and staff. My blood will always run Orange. Just like to thanks everyone who posts. Don't know who runs the site now but thank you and thanks to those who advertise and make it possible. Everytime I go to Knoxville I try and patronize some eatery, clothing store or anyplace that is on the Volnation site. From Old EtowahVol Go Vols

We reminisce about Gridscape about once or twice a year around here, and there's nothing wrong with that. Gridscape was ahead of the times, way, WAY ahead. It made being a fan something extra special back in the 90s. I could name lots of names but I was bad about paying attention to who were the true "gurus." Just recall a lot of ridiculous gossip and insider commentary, and ALL OF IT FREE (more or less). Just good people shooting the big orange breeze. Chatting about "the big ol' fisherman" (Fulmer) casting his line every recruiting season. What a hoot. Back before corporations and big money took hold of the internet - and college sports - in general.

Also, the OppoNent was SEC Rant before the SEC Rant was even an idea in someone's head. It was so close to being that site. I always like adding that, because I do lament that Gridscape went the way it did. Just went in a strange direction at the wrong time.

That said, though, I agree about thanking Freak and everyone who helps make this place run. VolNation has more than taken up the mantle of being the destination Vol fan site, and continues to carry the banner high. There's no finer college sports site on the internet. Not a one. And most can't even hold a candle. We are incredibly fortunate to have this place.

Yeah but let's be honest...many of us donated to Gridscape to keep it up and running...only for the owner to eventually sell it for who knows how much money. The way I see it, in a sense, that made us stockholders, albeit ones who were never thanked, let alone repaid.

And even then, the moderator(s) seemingly developed a Messianic complex with banning posters and there was clearly a holier than thou "in-crew" and then there was...the rest of us. Fortunately there was this place and OM to take up the slack and be able to speak more freely.

You are totally right about that. I was not one of the chosen and was banned for making some kind of benign statement by Cornelius. Came to VN and left that board. I do miss all of those old names. It was very entertaining.

Loved the early days, even the fact Chuck was willing to put his stamp on the checkerboard left border with a WWJD on it. Went thru several of his system iterations, one evidently required a minimum number of characters in the name SOOOOO…. I had to trade in AMaVOL for GUNTERSVOL. Only name on any site since, even after moving back 7 miles from Neyland in 06’. Lots of respect worthy guys have left this life too early. Lived pretty close to GUIDO for years, but never met him. Love these guys who share real facts about recruits etc.

I remember getting chided by Jumpmaster for not reading the thread before asking a question. Good lesson learned.
