If we take a vote here in the Volnation can we award three or four more national titles to the Volunteers?

yeah they have a few claiming a title when only 1 of the more minor official polls awarded it (41,45,66,75,77)

along those same lines though, if we're calling them out on that, then tennessee can really only claim about 4 championships (40 would be extremely iffy, and 56 and 67 definitely not)

I think we could claim 2 officially iirc. It just makes me mad when I go into college merchandise shops and see the banners that give Alabama all 12 but only give Tennessee 2. That is irritating.

It's two if you go by the AP poll alone....which was never really the "official" marker but since it became so big in its later years, there's a whole bunch of fans who argue that the Coach's and AP are the end alls (which pre-50s or so they were not)...it was really a convoluted mess of a bunch of polls with no bearings before then honestly but

we have a 1998 BCS championship
1951 we did get both the AP and UPI (what was the coach's poll)

however also 1938 - well before the AP was the end all - Tennessee was claimed #1 by 8 of the then big 13 polls, which was well more than anyone received (in fact was more of a - as far as total polls - UT was #1 on 24 of them while TCU was on only 14)

1940, 1956, and 1967 pose problems because they are years where UT was only voted 1 by a single poll (or two); including those in turn would be stretching it the same was Bama's 13 is

1950 UT does pose a dilemma though: the 50's do mark the 1st time that the AP and UPI (coach's) are deemed "consensus" (and for a while one called the FWAA and another called the NFF were as well). In 1950 UT was named number 1 pre-bowl games by 6 of the 15 major polls then. OU had the same number but 2 of their 6 were the AP and UPI polls (overall though, UT was place #1 by 18 polls while OU was by 11). However 1950s UT was also the only team in the top 5 to come out of their bowl game victorious; and OU's only loss came in their bowl to Kentucky who UT had beaten that year.....it's a really messy one honestly

Reality is though, Tennessee can realistically claim 3 NCAA championships, with a debatable 4th.

there's no real way the 13 to 2 idea works though, outside of ignorance or blind idiocy. If you go by the AP as end all (which is still an exaggeration), then it's 8 to 2. Including any year a single poll alone voted makes it 13 to 7. Realistically it's somewhere along the lines of 8 to 3, arguably 8 to 4.

Good info right there. I wish I'd known all that so I could have use it as ammo on the Bammer douche behind the counter that told me 13-2 was right.

no prob

also since you mentioned it at the beginning of your last post, the university claims 6 national championships (they don't claim 1956)....but that's really not as strong as some of the other points if you're having to fend off an angry fan

Facts for Now:
Alabama has more NC than Tn.
Alabama has more SEC champ.
Tn. has a losing record to Alabama and Auburn
Alabama has it first Heisman winner, Tn. not yet
Alabama's stadium growing , Tn. can't fill what it has
Alabama beat 3 NC winners last year in one season
Alabama opened last 2 season beating top 10 teams
Alabama has top ranked coach, Tn. not yet
Alabama preseason #1
Alabama's 2011 recruiting class alreay looking like a top 3 class
For now I will enjoy the these things, and could care less about arguing over 13, 8, or 17.
I know someone will come back with Alabama has more trailers, less teeth, and more unemployment, even though I was in Tn. this past week, and saw trailers, toothless people, and read that Tn. unemploymen rate was 10.6 (Alabama's 10.8).
The present is good, Tn.'s can change too with a great coach, good recruiting, believing in the program, and a little luck or a lot (blocked kicks).

You can tell it is the summer silly season when a Montgomery newspaper disparages 5 of Bamma's mythical national championships in the hope that somebody in that state will actually read the sporst section.

Montgomery is only 30 minutes from Auburn, article written for Auburn fans. Sports section is probably the first and only section read.

We still aren't AL, which props up the rest of America in an enormous number of stats related to education of the populace and we're not printing ridiculous shirts about "Got Thirteen" and other such silliness.

The relative position of our two football teams have little to do with that reality.
