FDA Chief Considers Ban of All Flavored E-Cigarettes

These are already, as far as I know, illegal to sell to people younger than 18.

I believe the real issue is cigarette sells are down causing a decline in tax revenue and this is the start of creating a new "Sin" tax, or, to get people back to buying cigarettes if they (the people) revolt against the idea of a new tax.

When it comes to the government's ABC's (FDA, EPA, IRS, etc...), I tend to lean to the cynical side.

(Moving to the PF in 3...2...1...)

The government should just sack up and make tobacco/nicotine products illegal or GTFO. For the record, I don't use any tobacco/nicotine products.

The thing I hate about vaping is people think it’s ok to do wherever they want in public spaces. In front of doorways, on play grounds, INSIDE stores/restaurants/movie theatres etc. To make it worse, the exhale cloud is 10x bigger than a cigarette.

Not everyone wants your second hand cotton candy vape people. I especially don’t want my kids breathing it on playgrounds. If you are going to do it please have the courtesy and awareness of other people around you.

Interesting idea. I've felt for a while that they've pretty much bled the tobacco industry dry, and needed to create a new boogy man to go after. I thought for a long time that would be the fast food industry.

It's funny how so much of this is simply marketing-driven. People think smoking rates have declined over time because everyone knows it is dangerous. That's part of it, but people consume all sorts of things that aren't good for them (alcohol, unhealthy foods, etc.) because they like it. Vaping isn't good for you either.

Smoking rates have declined in the United States over time primarily because it no longer became fashionable to do so. But do you know what is fashionable? These Juuls. People want to smoke, and now something has come along that is fashionable, so they just are doing that.

Just another fake "we're looking out for you" campaign by the government.

I compare it to those youngins with the diesel powered pickups and doing what they call "Rolling Coal". I don't like either.

Why did it suddenly become unfashionable to smoke?

Smoking used to be fashionable when movie and tv stars were always seen doing it. Vaping is still very niche. I wouldn’t say it’s “fashionable”. Not like you see Taylor Swift or Bruno Mars vaping on the Tonight Show or something.

If anything smoking pot is becoming increasingly more “fashionable” as public opinion of its therapeutic benefits improves along with its unbalanced burden on the justice system worsens even amongst conservatives.

Big tobacco is largely unaffected by the vaping industry. It's big pharma and anti-smoking orgs that are lobbying against the vapor industry. If you ever get a chance to study the FDA legislation on vaporizers, you will soon find out that it's a huge ploy to wipe out the whole industry by 2022.

I worked for a manufacturer for several years and became very intimate with all of the issues. As a libertarian, I definitely don't like it and I think it's a farce. Especially the accusation of companies actively marketing to minors. There are a lot of responsible and reputable companies that go out of their way to do the opposite.

I honestly don't know why it became unfashionable. The fact that we found out they are terrible for your health has something to do with it, but it is worth noting that it is really only unfashionable in the United States. In most of the developing world (China, for example), rates of smoking are actually increasing, and in Europe smoking rates are holding steady. Something like 50% of Italian and French people aged 18-35 smoke. And I'm not talking vaping...I'm talking smoking cigarettes. In the United States, it's something like 15%. Purely anecdotal, but I was over there this summer and was astounded at the number of people who smoke, even though I knew what the stats were. It has been and continues to be a part of their culture in a way that it never was in the United States. Vaping is not a thing in Europe and the developing world; it's mostly a US phenomenon.

Vaping is definitely what I would call fashionable; just because prominent celebrities aren't doing it doesn't mean it isn't fashionable. They are hugely popular among high school kids and marketed via social media. I agree that smoking pot is fashionable and obviously becoming more accepted. Cigarette smoking, for one reason or another, is viewed as a dirty, trashy, lower-class habit. It wasn't in the 1960s but it is today, yet nothing about the cigarette itself has changed. These Juuls, on the other hand, are modern-looking (it looks like a flash drive with lights on it) and deemed cool.

Exactly. Don't know which one is "healthier," so to speak, but I do know that vape vapors(???) trigger my asthma much worse than cigarette smoke.
