Come on . . . she's an 80 year old woman. Forgive her if she's anything other than honest.

I thought of that too, after I posted this. But, still. After being first lady for four years, you think she'd know how to be sensitive to these kinds of issues.

I know what you are saying. Just giving you a hard time.

It probably would not have been my choice of words, but if you think about it, she's got a point. The harsh reality is that there are probably a lot of people who are in better living conditions, eating better and receiving better healthcare in the Astrodome than they were when they were back in New Orleans in their own homes.

She actually does have a point, now that you mention it. I still may have kept that observation to myself.

When asked about the War in Iraq, she also said, "Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

I don't care what your politics are, but those two statements show an elitist attitude. If you can't admit that, there's a problem.

What is this - the bash an 80 year old lady thread???

Talk about ripping a statement out of context?!

When she made that statement, there wasn't even a war going on in Iraq...She was not commenting on actual fatalities. She said that PRIOR to the war even beginning and was making the point that she didn't watch TV news because rather than report the news, the media spent too much time time spouting opinion and predicting what might happen.

Hard to argue with that.

Two defenses of Barbara Bush in 24 hours? Maybe I need to be her Press Secretary.

Now I love Babs as much as any Conservative Republican. And I have to say she is dead on. For the majority of the REFUGEES (since the media doesn't use it anymore I do), having shelter, 3 squares, clothing, a minimum $2,000.00 debit card, a place to bath, etc. is an upgrade. And on a more personal note, if libs want to continue to say the administration is a bunch of racists, then they need to learn to swallow the truth.

If the libs want to continue to play the race card, they might want to clean up their own backyard first... A former KKK member as the elder Senator in their party? Yeah... not to mention being the party that for to maintain slavery...

It's not pc that's ruining the country, lack of respect and manners for each other is ruining the country. If everyone would just be respectful the term PC would have never been invented.

I know, it's too much to ask anymore. If ya can't smack someone else down, what good is life, eh? The smackdown is always followed by the pc bashing, wierd.

and here's another classic....
The Wall Street Journal reported that Representative Richard Baker of Baton Rouge was overheard telling lobbyists: "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did."

Care to 'splain to me if that quote is PC? Do ya think it's crap like this that has created the PC idea?

Oh My God the callousness of some people is truly amazing. How do you even respond to a heartless piece of s*** comment like that :banghead:

I'm with you GAVol. I agree with Mrs. Bush. I've always heard how difficult life is in the poorer neighborhoods of New Orleans. They ARE better off in most instances right now than they would be at home, and they have people caring for them. And as for Richard Baker's comment, it may or may not be true. I have worked with him on committees, doesn't sound like something he would say. And if he did say it, then it may have been taken out of context.

Think of it this way.... many of these people were in a revolving cycle of poverty, welfare, poor education, and all those other inner city social problems. The same as in many other cities in the USA. It is a staggering, overwhelming situation to fix. It keeps growing and the population keeps expanding in these areas. It's horrible to see the people of my state spread out like that, but look at the good that has come of it. They are getting individual care and attention focused on them. They are finding better housing, food, help, and jobs. There are volunteers all over trying to help them make a better life for themselves. In an inner city situation there are too many for the governmental staff to help any individual person much. My hat is off to America for the love, compassion and aid that has been given to the people of Louisiana. I cannot imagine New Orleans without them and their charm. We are hearing over and over that they are finding opportunities elsewhere and are considering a permanent move. So maybe the comments were taken out of context. Who knows? Let's just look at the good that has come of this, and be PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! Let's stand together.
