Interesting. The cynic in me says he sacrificed principle for re-election potential but either way I'm glad he finally saw the light on this one.

Washington » President Barack Obama on Friday scrapped his administration’s controversial plans to tighten smog rules, bowing to the demands of congressional Republicans and some business leaders.

Obama overruled the Environmental Protection Agency and directed administrator Lisa Jackson to withdraw the proposed regulation to reduce concentrations of smog’s main ingredient, in part because of the importance of reducing regulatory burdens and uncertainty for businesses at a time of rampant uncertainty about an unsteady economy.

The announcement came shortly after a new government report on private sector employment showed that businesses essentially added no new jobs last month — and that the jobless rate remained stuck at a historically high 9.1 percent

It begs the question though - if he recognizes how regulatory burdens and associated uncertainty are at the root of stagnation; why not go further?

It seems to me that by imposing burdens then later lifting the same burdens that the administration is only adding to the uncertainty. The nature of the uncertainty is that businesses struggle to understand what their liabilities will be. Going back and forth will only exacerbate the uncertainty.

MSM will tell you it was to apease the Rs but this was a move for the Coal Unions. The old coal plants need to be shut down and replaced with NatGas.

Now if Obama allows the XL Keystone pipeline, then I will be surprised

They dont like it because it involves digging the earth up. Both to get the oil and to lay the pipleline. I dont like Oil Sands because its not an efficient use of energy, but I want that oil to stay in N. America and not be shipped to China

I actually think he is going to. My suspicion is that he will mention this in his speech as part of a more business-friendly strategory moving forward.

So its a political move now, and he was not business friendly before?

lessen epa restrictions on drilling in the gulf, ect. then i may start to listen or is this a ploy to be used by obama and his party. after his re-election he has his epa enforce more harsh regulations. we should be very cautious on anything our elected officials say. why would our government do anything to slow or stop job creation?
