I think the "surprise" team will be Georgia. I don't see a state with that much talent and a program with the recent history that UGA has of putting together two stinker seasons.

I think Georgia and Vanderbilt will be the ultimate class of east. I think Florida may be a year away from being the best team in SEC in a long time.

With the new bats though, it may be who plays small ball best. That is why I favor Vandy and UGA over Florida.

The west is a toss up. I don't know who can play small ball over there. Some of these schools may be moving up their fences by mid-March.

Hands down the best team in the east will be Florida this year! They have almost everybody back. Their starting pitching should be solid and the pen is deep.

Wht's the deal with the bats this year? I get they don't have as much ding to them, but have they really been reeled in that much?

Excellent another Vols will finish last, or 5th.

People did not expect the Vols to be playing for the final spot in the SEC Tournament in the last week of the 2010 season.
This year it won't be another close but no cigar. The Vols are going to be proving detractor's wrong.

The 2011 season starts in 3 days.

You're getting better at rewording the same post you've been making OVER and OVER again... Pathetic!!!

From my understanding the new testing standard has rendered aluminum bats equal to or just barely better than wood bats.

exactly. don't expect any 15-12 games this year, unless the team's pitching is just horrid !!! :salute: :salute: :salute:

These new bats are a joke. Especially the Easton ones. We have used 4 and all 4 broke within one game. The end caps on all the bats break off and Easton said this is a problem all around the country. Look for lots of busted bats this weekend.

However, if you square the ball up on them, it will still go a long way. The biggest difference are balls that just miss the sweet spot, those won't go near as hard or far as they have in the past.

They're still better by a long shot. But there are actually some punishment for not hitting the sweet spot with these new ones.

Shouldn't be as many off-centered balls leaving the yard.

From the few posts here, it sounds like a great change.

What was the measurement change?

Ah, well the technical term is that the bats have to be BBCOR .50 certified, whatever that means. Basically, this new metal does not give at all. Last year after a game, the bats would be real dented up. This years bats had zero dents, even after substantial usage. Then the end caps busted off.

They're not a long shot better than wood by no means. I've talked to some players and coaches and 9 inning intersquads are lasting 2 hours...which is extremely wood like. Speed, defense, and pitching will be the keys to winning. Do we have enough of each to win is the question

The quick games are also a result of an emphasis on the "pitch clock". Pitchers and batters have 20 seconds in between pitches to make the next pitch (when no one is on base) and batters can only take one foot out of the batters box. There is also a time limit in between innings. If a pitcher is late, it's a ball and if a batter is late, it's a strike.

They have a rules meeting at the coaches convention every year and apparently they spent most of the time talking about the new timing rules.

UF should be solid again. Vandy will be tough as well. I would like to see us win it all again this year, but we have a few question marks with our bullpen.

The clock counting down on the scorboard in between innings may be going a bit far.
