Baseball RULE 5 Draft..HELP!!

Someone, please explain to me what in the world is the rule 5 draft??

The Braves have put 5 pitchers on the 40 man roster to protect them from being drafted.

Can any team take any young prospect they like that is not protected??

I know it is suppose to help teams from stockpiling too many young prospects, but can you just take whomever you please???

And how many rounds is it usually?

They are only rule 5 eligible so many years after they are drafted (5 years I believe). If they have been in your system for the allotted amount of years and are not protected by your 40 man roster, they are eligible to be picked up by other teams. The player drafted from the Rule V draft must stay on the new teams 25 man roster for the entire season. If they don't the other team can bring back the player if they wish.

Basically it's just a way to keep a team from burying prospects in their farm system indefinitely.

I think that any player with 3+ years of service time who is not on the 40 man roster is eligible to be taken under Rule V for a fee, but the player must remain on the drafting team's 25 Man (ML) roster, for a full season, DL time not withstanding. If the player is demoted, he must first be offered back to the original team at 1/2 the purchase price.
