I know that the VolNation is usually focused on football but I assume I am not the only Vol who is bewildered and interested in why/how our men's basketball program has continued to decline over the past years. I am old....and I was a student at Tennessee when we were SEC champs and always a serious contender in the NCAA.....I remember well celebrating on Cumberland when we won the SEC!!! It was great....Buzz and others have been hired in the hopes of reviving the program....it has not happened....our problems did not begin with Buzz. I am interested in thoughts/opinions about what is/has happened....any thoughts about solutions???

Half assed, half hearted players IMO. Buzz does OK with the X and O side of the equation. Unfortunately, he's recruited some lazy, uninspired players.

I think that his recruitment is not very good..And the kids just dont have enough fire in them

I dunno but whatever the problem is, it needs to be fixed. And this starts with getting a new head coach. UT brought buzz in thinking that we could start winning more games and getting in more ncaa tournaments. this has not happened. and unfortunately it's not going to happen this year i'm afraid. ut basketball is not headed in a bad direction. and if he sticks around another year, it's going to damage our program.

Like said above, I think Buzz does a great job with X's & O's. The problem is the team only gives about 60% effort. We need better recruiting and the players need convinced that we can hang with the likes of Kentucky, Arkansas, and the other top notched programs. They seem to play not to get blowen out instead of playing to win. JMO

it seems that his halftime talks don't work either. if you've noticed, we hang around in the first hlf and then self-destruct in the 2nd.

Bad hires the last 20 years, Charles Benson screwing over UT when they let his son go, lack of stability in the coaching ranks at UT and a program berift of talent when the current coach took over.

I know the problem and it is from the AD. They are so scared to go out and get a bigtime coach. You pay for what you get. I understand that Fulmer and Summit have earned the pay they have right now. Just go get a big name who can fill that area up. I remember when 3 coaches was available but we didn't want to spend the money or take a chance on the coach who had baggage. The coaches i am talking about Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith(when the wildcats wanted to get rid of him) and the coach i would have got, U guessed it......... Bobby Knight!!! I know yall think i am crazy but hear me out on this one. For one , He can bring the players in, Two He won't have lazy players who don't give 100% and Three he can fill that 25,000 seat artea up.Heck i mean if he can win at Texas Tech, what do you think he can do with a top notch area and what's all around it. WE can have a bigtime program just like football and the ladies program

Personaly I'd love too see UT hire Gene Keady! He said he would consider coaching next season if the right deal was there. His name and reputation alone would bring in better players. He's also a VERY proven coach.

UT AD afraid to hire a bigtime coach. I'll call this one BULL. Who do you think would come to UT if they are a bigtime coach? Ain't gonna happen. Keady, Knight, Pitino HAHAHAHA forget it. UT will not pay the basketball coach more than the football coach and that is facts and I wouldn't want them to.

By the way I wouldn't accept Booby Knight if he garunteed an NCAA Championship every other year.

Tennessee is a football school with an enormously successful women's b-ball program. That's two strikes against you when trying to recruit top calibur players. I think Buzz does the best with what he has, but he would be better served by going out and getting more desciplined players and shying away from JuCo transfers.

Yes, but there was a time when we had all three....maybe the women were not as big as they are now....but football and basketball were fairly well balanced as to their success....both were steady contenders for the SEC Champs. There are programs that seem to have all three...

i think we just need that one player that makes all his team better. we need that sg that makes the big passes and shots, kinda like how hayes is for kentucky and how reddick is for duke.

It all comes down to a "big-time coach".There is no other reason any star recruit would want to come to TN. and until you get stars, the arena will remain empty. Get the big-time coach and it's guaranteed. The big-time coach, meaming one of the top two or three in the country. He get's the recruits, and then the recruits and winning fills the stands. I don't believe Buzz can grow into that arena. Buzz is a nice guy, but we didn't build an arena that holds over 20,000 people to honor him. We built it to fill it up and bring glory to the university.

Kevin Oneil wasn't a "big time" coach and he landed some top recruits and put the pieces together to land them...ie giving del baker a scholly so he could get yarbough the next year.

We need a coach that will recruit 24/7 and that is the problem with buzz, he is a lazy recruiter. He takes other teams scrapes (all the transfers and lofton falling into his lab because uk,cincy, and uofl didn't offer)

Buzz isn't a good or great x's and o's coach, have you seen our half court offense?

Yes, Buzz will be back and I have it from a good scource, so get ready for a bad next year, you are seeing what our front court is going to look like next year with out crump.

If we were looking at coaches...I have a list of names that I have no doubt would come to Tennessee if we offered them buzz pay 900k a year (btw if you didn't know this buzz is the third highest payed coach in the sec, does anyone think we are getting cheated?)

My List
1) Bobby Lutz UNCC, been to the ncaa tourney 4 times, this year 5
2) Gregg Marshall, winthrop
3) Mike Anderson, UAB
4) Bobby Gonzalez, Manhattan
5) Johnny Dawkins, Duke - maybe a longshot
6) Dave Leitao, Depaul
